Trauma Informed Care, De-Escalation and Crisis Intervention for the Workplace - Module 2

Program Description: During this presentation, participants will be introduced to the terms trauma and secondary trauma, and the difference between the two terms. They will be introduced to how trauma effects workplace relationships and the warning signs of a mental health crisis and risks for suicide. Concepts of how to manage secondary traumatic stress and the ABCs of self-care will be reviewed, and participants will learn about the goals of de-escalation, how to identify de-escalation tools, and local and community resources.

Who Should Attend: Anyone looking to gain knowledge about trauma informed care in the workplace setting. 

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this activity, participants will - 

  • Know and understand the term trauma as it relates to the healthcare setting and healthcare providers and patients/clients
  • Understand the impact of trauma has on functioning and brain development
  • Understand the impact of trauma on the social, emotional, and physical health of healthcare workers, patients/clients and families
  • Know and understand the term secondary traumatic stress, its brain physiology, and the resulting possible behaviors (causes and triggers)
  • Know and understand the benefits of Trauma-informed Care (TIC) and will know how to incorporate TIC into healthcare delivery
  • Recognize signs and symptoms of escalation
  • Know verbal de-escalation techniques as well as trauma-informed crisis intervention strategies and how to implement them in a mental health crisis while keeping the healthcare worker and patients/clients safe
  • Understand the benefits of and how to conduct a healthcare team debriefing
  • Identify local and community resources
