NEW Fall 2024!

Starting with the graduating class of 2021, the Rhode Island Gold Seal of Biliteracy and the Rhode Island Silver Seal of Biliteracy have been available for students to earn at the high school level. The Seal of Biliteracy celebrates students who have multilingual competence and certifies that students have demonstrated skills in the English language and one or more other world languages. Please view the RIDE policy, which provides an overview and outlines the Seal of Biliteracy Criteria.

World Language Courses

The Silver Seal of Biliteracy and the Gold Seal of Biliteracy are accepted as world language courses if taken during high school and if a student’s high school transcript indicates that the student will be receiving or has received the state Seal of Biliteracy.

CCRI has established the following criteria to translate a state Silver and Gold Seal of Biliteracy into course credit based upon world language course equivalencies:

  • Silver Seal of Biliteracy: Credit for a 1040 level course (3 credits awarded), For example SPAN 1040 Elementary Spanish II (3 credits)
  • Gold Seal of Biliteracy: Credit for a 1040 level course and a 2010 level course (6 credits awarded), For example SPAN 1040 Elementary Spanish II (3 credits) & SPAN 2010 Intermediate Spanish I (3 credits)

Students enrolled at CCRI who have received a State Seal of Biliteracy must initiate a request for the above credit award within three (3) academic years after graduating from high school.
