Prismatic Perception

This interdisciplinary web-based project stems from the notion that humanities and technology are perceived to be mutually exclusive. Prismatic Perception aims at bridging these two worlds by eliminating this misperception.

Welcome To Prismatic Perception

The Prismatic Perception Humanities Project is being developed by a group of faculty from the Community College of Rhode Island. This interdisciplinary web-based project stems from the notion that humanities and technology are perceived to be mutually exclusive. Prismatic Perception aims at bridging these two worlds by eliminating this misperception.

Phase I (December 1999 - December 2000) of the project was supported by the Community College Humanities Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The first step was the creation of a "Mona Lisa" web module, which will serve as a model for future humanities web-based projects.

Prismatic Perception was one of 17 projects chosen out of more than 100 submitted nationwide. As part of their selection, the team of CCRI faculty attended a national conference at George Mason University recently on the use of technology in the humanities.

The Prismatic Perception Project has evolved into the College's offering of The Learner's Journey (LIBA-1000) course offering.

Prismatic Perception aims at bridging these two worlds by eliminating this misperception. For the initial history development, please explore: The Learner's Journey Development.

Let your curiosity guide you through this multi-disciplinary course, taught by Professor Carol A. Panaccione.

Texts used in this course focus on transformational journeys and may include the writings of Joseph Campbell, Plato, Paulo Coelho, Langston Hughes and Dr. Martin Luther King.

The Mona Lisa Module

Current Course Offering based on the Evolution of "The Mona Lisa Module" - THE LEARNER'S JOURNEY

"To develop the mind: Study the art of science. Study the science of art. Learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else." - Leonardo Da Vinci

The Mona Lisa Module is the prototype for the Prismatic Perception Humanities web page, which has now developed into our critical thinking online course offering:

The Learner's Journey:  LIBA-1000

Centered in this hypermedia virtual learning environment, the study of the Mona Lisa will achieve a dynamic holistic quality. Students will journey through a contextualized, multidimensional, virtual world previously unavailable to them.

They will have the ability to delve into the life of Leonardo da Vinci, listen to his own musical compositions, view paintings that were produced in the 16th century throughout Europe, compare and contrast the literary texts of the time, journey virtually to Florence, then to the Louvre in Paris, and step into and explore the historical context in which Leonardo da Vinci lived.

Transposed to this interactive, hyperlinked, multifarious setting, the Mona Lisa web module will enable our students to begin to view their studies as implicitly holistic and will ultimately foster critical thinking.
