Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month
Not Your Model Minority Film Screening
Date: Friday May 30th 12:30pm - 1:30pm
Location: Knight Campus Room 4104
In celebration of AAPI Heritage Month, we invite you to a film screening of Not Your Model Minority, an award-winning documentary that challenges the model minority myth. The film explores the origins of this stereotype, its harmful impact on Asian American communities, and highlights the diverse voices and lived experiences within those communities. Following the screening, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) will host a group discussion to reflect on the film’s key themes. Attendees are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and engage in meaningful dialogue.
Pride Month
Sojourner House Learning Sessions: History & Allyship
Dates: Tuesday June 10th from 1pm - 2:30pm & Tuesday June 24th from 11am - 12:30pm
Location: Flanagan Campus Room 1145 & Knight Campus Room 4104
Join us for an engaging two-part training series designed to honor LGBTQ+ history and strengthen inclusive allyship. In the first session, we’ll explore the diverse stories, struggles, and milestones that have shaped LGBTQ+ communities, from pre-colonial traditions to the modern day rights movement. In the second session, we’ll go beyond basic allyship by challenging harmful narratives around gender and sexuality and sharing practical tools to foster inclusion and support in daily life. Come ready to learn, reflect, and take meaningful steps toward solidarity.
Juneteenth
Local History & Community Partners Panel Discussion

In celebration of the upcoming opening of the African American History Museum in Rhode Island, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) invites you to a special panel discussion in honor of Juneteenth. This conversation will feature three guest panelists, each bringing a unique perspective and area of expertise, to explore the history and significance of Juneteenth.
Together, we’ll examine why this holiday matters—not only within the broader context of American history, but also for us as Rhode Islanders and members of higher education. Join us for an engaging and thought-provoking dialogue as we reflect on the meaning of Juneteenth and the importance of remembering and honoring Black history.

This accolade is a testament to our collective commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse community. Diversity and inclusion are not just values; they are the cornerstone of our mission. While the work is never done, we've made great strides, and this award acknowledges the collective effort put in by every member of our CCRI community.
Hispanic Serving Institution
The Community College of Rhode Island is proud to be formally designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). As an HSI, we remain committed to expanding educational opportunities and improving the academic attainment of Hispanic and low-income students; the support and promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education; and expanding and enhancing the academic offerings, program quality, and institutional stability of colleges and universities that are educating the majority of Hispanic college students.
After many years as an Emerging HSI, CCRI earned HSI designation for the 2021-22 academic year with a 25.1% full-time Hispanic student population. Hispanic-serving institutions play an important role in higher education by increasing educational opportunities, access and success for the nation's Hispanic population. The Office of Organizational Development & Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is committed to continue creating strategies and innovative ways to support our Hispanic students. DiversityJobs, a job search engine that helps connect job seekers with employers who value diversity, recently named CCRI as one of its Top Diversity Employers for 2022.
According to DiversityJobs, "the student body at [CCRI] enjoys considerable diversity in ages, cultures and experiences." The site also lauded the work of CCRI's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council in building a more diverse and inclusive community by making employees of all backgrounds to feel valued and that they belong, strengthening cultural competency for all employees, and increasing the diversity of the college's staff, faculty, and leadership.
