Sears Spurs Knights Baseball to First 2020 Win in Florida!

Warwick, R.I. – March 18, 2020: The CCRI Knights baseball team continued their 2020 campaign Tuesday, March 10th in Auburndale, Florida as they took on the Vermilion Community College Ironmen (MN) for a single seven inning game. The Knights dominated throughout behind the stellar pitching performance of sophomore co-captain Ben Sears (East Providence, RI) and cruised to a 4-0 victory over the Ironmen. The win improves CCRI’s season record 1-6 overall.

Looking to end the Florida trip on a high note, CCRI were in inspired from for their seventh and final game before heading back home. The scoring started in the third inning as CCRI took a 3-0 lead. Freshman Brodie Carey (North Attleboro, MA) got things started with a RBI double to center field. Sophomore co-captain David Meech (Douglas, MA) doubled the lead with a RBI single to right field. The final dagger of the inning was dealt by freshman Jesus Ortega (Providence, RI) as he smacked the ball down the right field line, going through a gate left open to take a certain triple back to a double, and one RBI.

Ben Sears kept the Ironmen silent at the plate, as they amassed just one hit and received a second base runner only due to a hit by pitch. The defense behind Sears was clinical, fielding every ball that came their way and not conceding a single error.

CCRI would tally another run in the top of the fourth inning as sophomore co-captain Anthony Ramos (Cranston, RI) got caught in a pickle, allowing sophomore Adrian Duran (Providence, RI) to come home.

The remainder of the game was relatively quiet as Ben Sears continued his domination, not allowing a single runner on the bags for the rest of the game. CCRI would defeat Vermilion 4-0 to earn their first win of the 2020 campaign.

The highlight of the day was certainly he performance on the mound of Ben Sears. Sears threw the complete seven inning game, allowing one solitary hit and striking out a whopping 15 batters.

The offense for the Knights was led by Jesus Ortega as he batted 2-3, a double and a single with one RBI. Anthony Ramos also batted 2-3 as he had one double and one single with a run scored. Brodie Carey contributed a double as he batted 1-3 while adding one RBI, one run scored and a stolen base. David Meech contribute one RBI, one run scored and a single as he went 1-3 at the plate. Adrian Duran tallied a 1-3 performance with a single and a run scored. Sophomore CJ Casalino (Bristol, RI) and freshman Lewis Nunez (Providence, RI) both were 1-3 at the plate with singles while Nunez added one stolen base. Sophomore James Pederson (Westerly, RI) rounded off the offense as he batted 1-2 with a single.
