Lady Knights Fall to Cougars in GCC Holiday Classic

Warwick, R.I. – December 9, 2019: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to Genesee Community College in Batavia, NY over the weekend to compete in the Genesee Community College Cougar Holiday Classic. On Saturday the Lady Knights faced the Cougars of Genesee. The Lady Knights lost to the Cougars 75-55. With the loss CCRI falls to 2-8 on the season.

The Lady Knights and Cougars battled closely in the first quarter with the Cougars taking a slight 16-12 lead after the first. The Lady Knights shared the ball well and got 3-pointers from Nicole Chamberlain (West Warwick, RI), Jada Burton-Hall (Providence, RI), and Jazlynn Jimenez (Providence, RI) but they were matched by Alayah Sweeney who poured in nine of her game-high 30 points in that quarter as well. In the second quarter CCRI’s high scorer Nicole Chamberlain erupted for 12 points including two 3-pointers but Sweeney and the Cougars were still able to extend their lead to 10 points by halftime with the score 41-31 Genesee.

Both teams battled pretty evenly in the third quarter as Chamberlain added six more points along with five points from Janessa Perry (Charlestown, RI). Once again the Cougars’ Alayah Sweeney could not be contained as she added 11 more to her total and Genesee extended their lead to 11 points. In the final quarter Genesee held Chamberlain scoreless but CCRI got four points from Jazlynn Jimenez but the Cougars used a balanced attack to pull away for the 75-55 victory.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Nicole Chamberlain with a team-high 21 points including five 3-pointers with three rebounds, two assist and a steal. Jada Burton-Hall had nine points and five rebounds. Janessa Perry had eight points, seven rebounds, an assist and two steals. Jazlynn Jimenez added seven points, three assists and two steals. Alayah Sweeney led all players in four statistical categories with 30 points, 12 rebounds, seven steals and five assists.

The Lady Knights will face No. 8 ranked (11-0) Thunder Wolves of Niagara County CC Sunday at 11am to complete their play in the 2019 GCC Cougar Holiday Classic.
