Lady Knights Beat Bayhawks 78-71 in Fall River!

Warwick, R.I. – December 13, 2019: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to Bristol Community College in Fall River, MA on Thursday evening to play the Bayhawks in a Region XXI inter league game. The Lady Knights defeated the Bayhawks 78-71. With the victory CCRI improves to 4-9 overall and 2-4 in Region XXI play.

The Lady Knights were playing in yet another tough game in this first semester facing the Bayhawks of Bristol CC who have No.2 scorer in Division III NJCAA Jada Fortin (34.9ppg) and the No. 4 scorer in DIII Katera James (26.0ppg). However, the Lady Knights are coming off on of their better efforts of the season versus Navy Prep.

Bristol came out firing on their home court and took a 22-16 lead after the first quarter. Katera James led the Bayhawks with seven points in the quarter while the Lady Knights answered with Ireauna Pegus (Middletown, RI) who scored eight point in the quarter and helped by Janessa Perry (Charlestown, RI) who added four points. In the second quarter the Lady Knights ratcheted up their defense and held the Bayhawks to just 10 point, nine of them coming from Jayda Fortin. CCRI’s offense was also starting to click as co-captain Nicole Chamberlain (West Warwick, RI) dropped in eight points including two 3-pointers. Janessa Perry added seven points in the quarter as the Lady Knights took a 36-32 lead into the halftime break.

CCRI came out of the halftime break with a burst of energy and once again outscored the Bayhawks with their best quarter of the game scoring 25 points. The Bayhawks also came out firing as they were trying to defend their home court and scored 19 points. Jayda Fortin led the way for Bristol in the quarter with seven points. But it was another Jada who took the spotlight in the quarter as Jada Burton-Hall (Providence, RI) poured in 15 points in the quarter while she got help from Nicole Chamberlain who added five points. The Lady Knights took a 61-51 lead into the fourth quarter. Jayda Fortin made a run at getting the Bayhawks the home victory by scoring 10 more points in the quarter. CCRI held off the Bayhawks with seven points from Janessa Perry and six more from Jada Burton-Hall to give the Lady Knights the hard fought 78-71 regional victory.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Jada Burton-Hall who came off the bench to chart her third Double-Double of the season by matching her career-high in scoring with 25 points on 11-15 shooting from the field, adding 11 rebounds, two steals and an assist. Janessa Perry also had an impressive performance scoring a career-high 18 points with seven rebounds, a steal and an assist. Co-Captain Nicole Chamberlain scored in double figures with 13 points including three 3-pointers with five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Ireauna Pegus had a great all-around game scoring 12 points with nine rebounds, five assists and four steals. Freshman co-captain point guard Jazlynn Jimenez (Providence, RI) directed the Lady Knights offense with tremendous efficiency with five points including a 3-pointer with six rebounds, two steals and a career-high 10 assists.

The next game for the Lady Knights will be Saturday the 14th at 12:30pm when they will host the Mustangs of Central Maine Community College for their last game of the semester.
