ACS Stop The Bleed Program

Uncontrolled bleeding from traumatic injuries is a leading cause of preventable death. During bleeding emergencies, minutes can mean the difference between life and death.

Stop the Bleed. Save a Life.

Recognizing the power that everyone has to prevent deaths from severe bleeding, ACS Stop the Bleed program teaches the public to safely respond to bleeding emergencies with three methods:

  1. After calling emergency personnel and ensuring the scene is safe
  2. Apply direct pressure to the wound 
  3. Pack the wound with gauze or clothing, and apply a tourniquet if appropriate.

These methods are simple enough for everyone to learn and effective in helping control bleeding during the critical time from injury to the arrival of emergency personnel.

Who should take this course?

ANYONE! ACS Stop the Bleed courses are available to anyone interested in learning to control life-threatening bleeding. Currently, the class is optional, however, it would be of benefit to CNA students, nursing students, EMT's, fire fighters, police, and other first responders. Seventeen states have already passed mandated bleeding control legislation.

What does the course teach?

ACS Stop the Bleed courses train to save lives through three basic actions to stop life-threatening bleeding following everyday emergencies and man-made and natural disasters:

  • Use your hands to apply direct pressure to a wound.
  • Pack a wound to control bleeding.
  • Apply a tourniquet.

Participants in the course will learn how to recognize life-threatening bleeding and act quickly and effectively to control it with three quick techniques. The ACS Stop the Bleed training course will empower you to make a life-or-death difference when a bleeding emergency happens.

Upon completing this course, you will receive a certificate of completion from the American College of Surgeons Stop the Bleed program.
