CCRI Launches Free Ophthalmic Technician Training Program to Prepare Rhode Islanders for High-Demand Healthcare Careers

Warwick, R.I. – The Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) is proud to announce the launch of a new Ophthalmic Technician training program through its Division of Workforce Partnerships. This 120-hour program, beginning in May 2025, is free of charge and designed to prepare participants for immediate employment in a fast-growing healthcare field.

Funded through the Perkins grant and developed in partnership with industry experts, the program includes hands-on training, job placement assistance, and preparation for national certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA). Starting wages range from $18–$20 per hour, with opportunities to earn $20+/hour upon national certification.

“Ophthalmic Technicians play a critical role in eye care supporting ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating patients, and this program will prepare Rhode Islanders to enter the workforce quickly and confidently in this high-demand field,” said John Renza, Interim Associate Vice President of Workforce Partnerships at CCRI.

This new offering is part of CCRI’s broader commitment to building short-term credentials that respond quickly to labor market needs, giving Rhode Islanders the skills they need for in-demand careers. Programs like this allow students to earn a credential of value that leads directly to employment, while also creating pathways for continued education and career advancement.

Ophthalmic Technicians assist in eye exams, conduct specialized testing, prepare patients for procedures, administer eye drops, and help educate patients on treatment plans. This training equips students with the knowledge and technical skills to thrive in a variety of clinical settings.
