Softball Spring Training 2018

Warwick, R.I. – March 13, 2018: The CCRI Lady Knights softball concluded play in the Cocoa Beach Spring Training Session at Chain of Lakes Park in Titusville, FL. In their final game CCRI faced St. Cloud Tech from St. Cloud, MN. The Lady Knights lost a heartbreaker 11-10. With the loss they fall to 0-6 on the season.

CCRI - 10 St. Cloud Tech - 11

In the circle for the Lady Knights was freshman Sam Muller (North Stonington, CT) who pitched well enough to win the game unfortunately some timely hitting for St. Cloud spoiled what would have been her first collegiate victory. Muller threw 6 2/3 strong innings allowing six earned runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts but yielded eight walks that came back to haunt her late in the game. This was once again another very tough line-up to which Muller pitched very well despite the high number of walks. However, you can see the tremendous potential and upside that is soon to be attained by the Lady Knights' freshman hurler.

This was the first game where the Lady Knights offense showed its true capability exploding for 13 hits and 10 runs with seven players offering hits to support the effort on the mound from Sam Muller. This was another back and forth affair as CCRI scored once in the second inning but St. Cloud answered with two in the bottom of the second. The Lady Knights tied the game in the top of the third but St. Cloud scored twice in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead. CCRI got a run back in the fifth to cut the St. Cloud lead to 4-3 but they answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-3 lead going into the sixth inning. In the sixth the Lady Knights went OFF. It started with back-to-back singles from Vanessa Santiago (Waterbury, CT) and Dalynn Jacobs (East Providence, RI) followed shortly by back to RBIs from Maddie McDonald (East Providence, RI), Hanna Caliri (Pawtucket, RI) and Michelle Spremulli (Warwick, RI). In total the Lady Knights scored five runs to take an 8-7 lead and held St. Cloud scoreless in the bottom of the sixth. The Lady Knights added two more runs in the top of the seventh Ina single from Caliri to give CCRI a 10-7 lead going into the bottom of the seventh. The Lady Knights were in prime position to get their first victory but unfortunately St. Cloud put forth their best inning as the top of the order leading off and got four runs to walk-off with a dramatic 11-10 victory. A tough loss but what an excellent game. CCRI has nothing to hold their heads down for they played their hearts out but did not get the victory.

At the plate for the Lady Knights freshman Michelle Spremulli was once again a tour de force going 4-4 with a triple, a double and two singles with two RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Maddie McDonald had three singles, two runs scored and an RBI, Tri-Captain Kailee Morgan (Charlestown, RI) added two singles and two RBIs and freshman Dalynn Jacobs broke out with two hits including a double, a single and two runs scored. Also having a big game was Vanessa Santiago had two hits and a run scored, Hannah Caliri had a hit with three RBIs and Tri-Captain Miranda Sasso (Smithfield, RI) had a hit a walk and a run scored.

The next games for the Lady Knights will be Saturday the 24th when they will host Suffolk County at 10am and New Hampshire each at 1:30 at Winslow Park in Warwick, RI.
