Warwick, R.I. – March 26, 2018: The CCRI Lady Knights softball team hosted the Sharks of Suffolk County Community College from Selden, NY for a doubleheader at Winslow Park I Warwick for their home openers. The Lady Knights split with the Sharks losing game one 9-0 and winning game two 3-2. With the split the Lady Knights improve to 1-7 on the season.

Game 1: CCRI- 0 Suffolk- 9 (5 innings)

In the circle for the Lady Knights in the first game was freshman Sam Muller (North Stonington, CT) facing a very good line-up from the Sharks of Suffolk County. Muller was victimized by two runs in the first on a sacrifice fly and an overthrow. Unfortunately on the overthrow there was a collision at home plate caused Tri-Captain Miranda Sasso (Smithfield, RI) to leave the game. Muller was pitching well but Suffolk still tacked on three more runs in the third and a grand slam in the fifth inning making the score 9-0. Without the late homerun the game was well within reach if the Lady Knights could have pushed across a couple runs but their bats fell flat in support on their pitcher.

At the plate for CCRI they only got two hits the first was from freshman left fielder Maddie McDonald (East Providence, RI) who had a single. Also helping CCRI was freshman Hannah Caliri (Pawtucket, RI) who also had a single and reached via an error. The only other base runner for CCRI was Stevie-Rae Travers-Wood (Little Compton, RI) who worked a walk. The Lady Knights will look to get their bats on track in game two versus the Sharks.

Game 2: CCRI- 3 Suffolk- 2

In the circle for the Lady Knights in game two was freshman Hannah Caliri who performed masterfully in her first home start for the Lady Knights. Caliri threw seven dominant innings allowing just one earned run on three hits, walking three batters but striking out a career-high 12 Suffolk batters. Caliri stuck out a batter in every inning but the seventh including striking out the side in the third and fourth innings and recording two strikeouts in the second and fifth innings. She was not done there as she was also the key components of the Lady Knights' offense going 3-3 with a single a double an RBI, a run scored and the game winning solo home run in the fifth inning. With her excellent effort Hannah earns her first victory of the season. For the day Hannah was 4-5 with two singles, a double and a homerun and reached base every time she batted while also picking up the victory in the circle.

Also helping CCRI at the plate was sophomore Danielle David (West Greenwich, RI) who went 2-3 with a single and a double. Tri-Captain Kailee Morgan (Charlestown, RI) and Vanessa Santiago (Waterbury, CT) each contributed with a single an RBI and a run scored and. Also adding to the CCRI offense was Tri-Captain Stevie-Rae Travers-Wood, Maddie McDonald, Dalynn Jacobs (East Providence, RI) and Sam Muller who each added a single apiece.

After the doubleheader Lady Knights Head Coach Kim Warrington commented: "We had a tough first game and Suffolk started very well. Sam [Muller] did not pitch badly we just didn't give her any run support like we can. Hannah [Caliri] had an excellent day going 4-5 with her first homerun and reaching base every time she batted and earned her first collegiate victory in her first home game. We just have to keep getting better every practice and game so we will be ready for the postseason."

The next games for the Lady Knights will be Saturday the 31st when they will host the Knights of Northern Essex Community College for a doubleheader beginning at 12noon at Winslow Park in Warwick.
