Beware of Scams
In today's digital world, it's more important than ever to stay vigilant against scams.
Fraudulent emails and job notifications are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and
they often target students and job seekers. Please take a moment to review this information
to help protect yourself.
Common Scams to Watch For
- Phishing Emails: These emails are designed to trick you into revealing personal information like
your passwords, bank account details, or Social Security number. They often look like
they come from a legitimate source, such as a company, a government agency, or even
- Fake Job Offers: Scammers may send fraudulent job offers that seem too good to be true. They might
ask you to pay a fee for "training" or "supplies," or request your personal information
to "set up direct deposit" before you've even had an interview.
Key Warning Signs
Be on the lookout for these red flags in any email or job notification:
- Urgency or Threats: Messages that demand immediate action, threaten to close your account, or promise
a limited-time opportunity.
- Poor Grammar and Spelling: Legitimate organizations rarely send messages with obvious errors.
- Unexpected Requests: Any unsolicited message that asks for your personal information, a fee, or a payment.
- Suspicious Sender: The sender's email address is from a public domain (like Gmail or Yahoo) or a look-alike
address (e.g., micros0ft.com instead of microsoft.com).
What to Do
If you receive a suspicious message:
- Do Not Click on Any Links. Hover over a link to see the real URL before clicking.
- Do Not Reply to the message or call any numbers provided.
- Do Not Provide Personal Information to the sender.
- Delete the Message. After verifying and confirming it is a scam, delete the email.
