Nursing Resources - Getting the Most Out of Lectures

Getting the Most Out of Lectures

Lectures are an important part of learning in the nursing program. Preparing ahead of time and staying engaged during class can help you better understand course material and make the most of your time in lecture. Here are some ways to do so.

Prepare Before Class

Whenever possible, complete assigned readings before the lecture. Reviewing the material in advance can make the lecture easier to follow and help you recognize key concepts when they are discussed in class.

PowerPoint slides are often available before class. As you review your readings or slides, note any concepts that are unclear. You may be able to ask questions during class, contact your instructor, or use course discussion boards for clarification.

Bringing your textbook to class may also be helpful, as some instructors use it during lecture or for in-class activities.

Staying Focused During Long Lectures

Nursing lectures can last two to three hours, which can make it difficult to maintain concentration. If you begin to feel tired or distracted, a brief break—such as stepping out for a moment to stretch or get water—may help you refocus.

Taking a short break can sometimes be more helpful than trying to push through when you are no longer able to concentrate.

Using Lecture Slides

Many instructors provide slide handouts for lectures. Some students find it helpful to print slides with more space for notes (for example, two slides per page instead of three) so that images are easier to see and there is room to write.

Choose the format that works best for you and supports your note-taking style.

Taking Notes During Lecture

You may take notes directly on printed slides or in a notebook. The best approach varies from student to student.

Rather than trying to write down everything the instructor says, focus on:

  • Clarifying points that were unclear in the reading
  • Adding examples or explanations shared during lecture
  • Noting key ideas emphasized by the instructor

Listening carefully and asking questions when something is unclear can help you stay engaged and deepen your understanding of the material.
