Mental Health and Wellness - Certificate

The certificate in Mental Health is for students who may be currently employed or interested in working within the Mental Health Community. The program introduces the profession of Human Services with a focus on Mental Health and Wellness for diverse and global populations. Students earning the certificate will learn or refine skills in communication, observation, documentation, research, ethical practices, and self-care. Students are introduced to multi-disciplinary resources and support. Students completing the Mental Health and Wellness Certificate will earn the Mental Health First Aid Certification.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, a student will be able to:

  1. Summarize key aspects of taking charge of health, wellness, and the relationship between human health, the environment, and successful aging.
  2. Discuss the dimensions of health, wellness, health disparities, the pros and cons of consumer health, advocacy in mental health, and the components of the healthcare system
  3. Describe the stages of change that influence or impede healthy behavior and ethics in mental health and wellness, specifically relating to the role of autonomy and self-assertion in boosting self-control.
  4. Understand the purpose of the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM), differences between mental health and mental disorders, treatment options, and communication pathways of the brain.
  5. Understand the role of personal nutrition, weight management, physical activity, sexual health, mindfulness, types of and psychological responses to stress, as well as communicating, and connecting in mental health and wellness practices.
