Red-hot softball team sweeps back-to-back doubleheaders

The Community College of Rhode Island softball team enters this week on a four-game win streak courtesy of back-to-back doubleheader sweeps on the road this past weekend.

The Knights won a pair against Monroe College-Bronx on Friday and then headed further north on Saturday in a sweep over Southern Maine Community College, improving their overall record to 7-7.

CCRI beat the Express by scores of 20-3 and 14-1 in six and five innings, respectively, and then beat Southern Maine 17-2 and 11-2, both in five innings. The Knights scored 62 runs during the four-game stretch and now rank among the nation’s best in Division III offensively; CCRI is currently 11th in runs (142), ninth in hits (180), sixth in stolen bases (45), third in batting average (.436), and fourth in slugging percentage (.513) entering another busy weekend in which they host Monroe and Southern Maine for six games from Friday through Sunday at Brayton Park.

Freshman catcher Ashley Klingberg (Coventry, RI) finished a phenomenal 13-for-15 over the past four games with 10 RBI and 14 runs scored; she now leads the team with a .561 batting average and has driven in 24 runs in just 14 games, which ranks her 16th in the nation. She’s also second in D-III with six triples.

Sophomore shortstop Lucie Willett (Charlestown, RI) is second on the team with a .543 batting average and also had a big weekend against Monroe and Southern Maine with six hits and 10 RBI in four games, including a 3-for-4 performance with two triples and three RBI in Game 1 of the Monroe doubleheader. Sophomore second baseman and co-captain Casey Regine (Cranston, RI) finished 8-for-14 over the weekend with a triple and six RBI and sophomore centerfielder Hanna Dias (Charlestown, RI) drove in six and stole a pair of bases during the doubleheader sweep over Monroe.

On the mound, freshman Victoria Butler (Johnston, RI) and sophomore Samantha Marsella (Rehoboth, MA) each pitched two complete games over the weekend; Marsella allowed only two earned runs over nine innings while striking out four and Butler pitched a total of 10 innings and allowed three earned runs with six strikeouts.

CCRI hosts Southern Maine at 2 and 4 pm on Friday followed by back-to-back doubleheaders Saturday against Monroe on Saturday and Sunday with 1 and 3 pm start times.
