‘Overjoyed’ CCRI Graduate Opens Up On Getting Engaged At Commencement’

Warwick, RI -- Samantha Lescarbeau knew she would experience one life-changing event at CCRI commencement. But she never expected what would happen after she walked across the stage at Amica Mutual Pavillion on May 15.

Shortly after receiving her General Studies degree, Lescarbeau was greeted by family, friends, and her boyfriend – who was waiting on one knee. She said “yes” and accepted a ring from her now- fiancé, Burrillville's Cameron Giguere, who since 2019 has served full-time as a mechanic in the Rhode Island National Guard.

“He asked me if I would marry him,” said Lescarbeau, who’s from Woonsocket, RI. “I was completely surprised and overjoyed. It was such a meaningful moment in my life. My family was so happy for us both, as everyone was filled with joy.”

Lescarbeau’s CCRI journey isn’t over yet.

After the COVID-19 pandemic forced Lescarbeau to pause her studies for a year, she applied to the Community College of Rhode Island to pursue her “dream” of becoming a CCRI Nursing graduate, like two of her closest relatives.

“I earned my General Studies degree with a concentration in Pre-Nursing, marking a significant milestone as the first in my family to receive a college degree and following in my aunt and grandmother's footsteps, both CCRI Nursing alumni,” Lescarbeau said.

“It wasn't always easy balancing full-time work with my studies, but I was determined to make my dream of becoming a nurse a reality. CCRI gave me the opportunity to go back to school and take all of my prerequisites while working full time. My fiancé has been so supportive of my journey and has made it possible for me to do so.”

Lescarbeau plans on taking courses at CCRI this summer with the goal of joining the school’s nursing program next spring.

“I'm so excited about what the future holds,” she said. “I want to thank the Community College of Rhode Island for making this all possible for me.”
