Professor Thomas Folcarelli, MSN, RN, JD, is a tenured Professor of Nursing. He has expertise both in critical care nursing and law. Professor Folcarelli graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1979 with a BA in Political Science and Philosophy. He went back to school the following year after working at the Ladd School in Exeter, Rhode Island as a medical attendant. He went to Newport Hospital School of Nursing for a year and then was accepted into the nursing program at URI. He finished his BSN at URI while working as a medical attendant at Newport Hospital in Newport, RI.
Professor Folcarelli started as a GN at Rhode Island Hospital on 5B, a busy surgical unit, and then went back to Newport Hospital to work in surgical nursing. Later, he worked in the Intensive Care Unit at Newport, and then as an Administrative Coordinator at Newport Hospital. He also worked per diem at RIH and gained experience in every ICU at RIH.
He went back to school while working in the Medical ICU at the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) in Providence, RI, and the Coronary Care Unit at Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket, RI, as well as a case manager at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of RI. He received his MSN at URI in 1991. After he completed his MSN, he joined the United States Army Reserve and served until 2006, receiving an honorable discharge as an Army Captain.
Professor Folcarelli began teaching Nursing at the Community College of Rhode Island in 1992. He has served on both levels I and II. He has also held adjunct nursing education positions at URI and Salve Regina University.
Professor Folcarelli attended law school in 1997 at Roger Williams University, and received his Juris Doctorate in 2000. He clerked with Randy Olen, Rob and Therese Caron, and to this day remains a solo practitioner in association with these expert attorneys. He is dedicated in the practice of law, particularly in affordable legal assistance to his fellow healthcare practitioners.
Currently, he teaches level II Nursing courses at CCRI, works as an AC at Newport Hospital, and practices law. He is a member of the Rhode Island State Nurses Association, The American Nurse Association, The National League of Nurses, The Rhode Island Bar Association, the Rhode Island Bar, the Federal Bar, and the First Circuit Court of Appeals.
