Warwick, R.I. – March 26, 2018: The CCRI Baseball team hosted the Blue Knights of Northern Essex Community College Friday evening. A 3-1 game going into the sixth exploded into a seven-inning 12-3 win for CCRI. This win propels the Knights to a 5-6 record on the season.

CCRI – 12 Northern Essex – 3 (7 Innings)

The Knights, who had to wait to hear whether or not the storm that closed down the state would postpone their game. Luckily the snow accumulation was minimal and come Friday afternoon, the field was in fine condition.

The Knights would start the game well as Austin Davis (Hollywood, FL) hit an RBI single, scoring Owen Wosleger (East Hampton, CT) to make the game 1-0 after one inning. Wosleger himself had led off the game with a single, then stealing second base, got into scoring position to set up the run. The scoring resumed again in the third as the Knights answered back to the run that Northern Essex had scored in the top half of the inning. Zach Odsen (Providence, RI) hit a single to right field where the outfielder misjudged the bounce and the ball got behind him advancing Odsen to third and scoring two runs. After three innings of play, the Knights were leading 3-1.

Pitching for CCRI was freshman Zach D'Andrea (Warwick, RI). D'Andrea threw seven innings allowing three runs of which only one earned a run. Of the 28 batters he faced, D'Andrea struck out six and didn't allow a single walk en-route to the win. His work allowed the CCRI bats to come alive and stretch the lead out to nine runs.

After Northern Essex tied the game up at three runs apiece in the top half of the sixth, the floodgates would open up for the Knights' offense. Jarrad Grossguth (Coventry, RI) stepped up to the plate with the bases juiced and absolutely obliterated an inside pitch pulling it to left-center and carrying it well past the fence for his first home run of the season. Grossguth's grand slam made the score 7-3

The Knights would score five more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Leading the offensive onslaught was Owen Wosleger, going 3-5 with one RBI one stolen base and three runs scored. Austin Davis and David Mejia (Pawtucket, RI) both managed batting 2-3 on the day. Davis added one stolen base, two RBI and a run scored while Mejia contributed one stolen base and one RBI. Zach Odsen went 2-4 with two RBI and Jarrad Grossguth's homer was his lone hit of the game but it was good enough to lead all Knights with four RBI. Baserunning was led by Michael Castillo (Cranston, RI) who managed three stolen bases in the game. The complete performance by the Knights enabled what in the end was a comfortable win as they dispatched Northern Essex 12-3.
