Lady Knights Split DH with Monroe College!

Warwick, R.I. – April 9, 2018: The CCRI Lady Knights softball team traveled to New Rochelle, NY to play the Mustangs of Monroe College for a doubleheader o Sunday. The Lady Knights split the double dip winning the first game in dramatic fashion 9-8 but losing the second 7-2. With the split the Lady Knights are now 5-9 on the season.

Game 1: CCRI- 9 Monroe College- 8

In the circle for the Lady Knights for the first game was Tri-Captain Kailee Morgan (Charlestown, RI). Morgan pitched seven solid innings allowing four earned runs on 10 hits, walking two and striking out four Mustang batters. Morgan battled hard in this back-and-forth scoring game and executed her pitches when she needed to get the tough outs to help her secure her second victory of the year to even her pitching record to 2-2 on the season.

At the plate for the Lady Knights freshman Maddie McDonald (East Providence, RI) led the way with two hits including 2-RBIs double. Also helping the CCRI offense was Michelle Spremulli (Warwick, RI) with a single, an RBI and a run scored, Tri-Captain Stevie-Rae Travers-Wood (Little Compton, RI) had a single and a run scored as did Dalynn Jacobs (Riverside, RI). Danielle David (West Greenwich, RI) had a single and an RBI while Hannah Caliri (Pawtucket had an RBI and a run scored and Vanessa Santiago (Waterbury, CT) added two walks and two runs scored.

This game has an exciting game to watch with plenty of runs being scored with the Lady Knights generating a big game-winning four-run rally in the sixth inning to overcome a three run deficit and secure the victory. With the score 5-3 Monroe in the fifth inning CCRI scored twice as Michelle Spremulli singled in Maddie McDonald then Hannah Caliri scored to tie the game 5-5. Monroe answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-5 lead. Vanesa Santiago walked and stole second to lead-off the sixth followed by a Dalynn Jacobs walk, Travers-Wood would advance them with a sac bunt. McDonald stroked a double to right-center to score Jacobs and Santiago. Caliri bunted McDonald to third and McDonald scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 8-8. Sophomore Danielle David singled-in Spremulli to give CCRI the 9-8 lead. Sophomore Tri-Captain Kailee Morgan pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh to secure the CCRI victory.

Game 2: CCRI- 2 Monroe College- 7

In the circle for the Lady Knights getting the start was Sam Muller (North Stonington, CT). Muller threw three innings giving up three earned runs on five hits, walking two and striking out two to take the loss. Muller was relieved by Hannah Caliri who pitched three innings giving up an earned run on four hits, walking one and striking out two.

At the plate for the Lady Knights the offense went flat compared to the first game of the doubleheader registering only five hits. Freshman Vanessa Santiago led the way with a single and an RBI followed by fellow freshmen Michelle Spremulli and Dalynn Jacobs who each had a double. Sophomore Tri-Captain Kalie Morgan and sophomore Danielle David each added a single and a run scored but it was not enough as CCRI would fall 7-2.

The next games for the Lady Knights will be Tuesday at 3:30 at Winslow Park when they will host the Warriors of Massasoit Community College from Brockton, MA for a Region XXI non-league doubleheader.
