Warwick, R.I. – April 30, 2017: The CCRI Lady Knights softball team traveled to North East, PA to compete in the Region XV/III/XXI Tournament. The Lady Knights were No. 2 seed and faced No. 3 seed Orange County CC and lost 8-3. Orange County lost to No. 1 seed Mercyhurst 11-4 in second game of tourney. The Lady Knights fell to Mercyhurst 8-4 in the third game eliminating them form tournament and ending their season with a 10-17 record. In the Championship Game Mercyhurst beat Orange 5-4 to earn the Region Championship and will host Region XIX champion next week in North East, PA for the District Championship.

Game 1: CCRI- 3 Orange County CC- 8

In the circle for the Lady Knights getting the start in the first game was Sam Muller (North Stonington, CT) who did not pitch poorly giving up three earned runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts top take the loss. Muller was a victim of poor defensive support as CCRI had five errors which led to five unearned runs. Muller was relieved by Hannah Caliri (Pawtucket, RI) who threw two innings giving up no earned runs on one hit with a strikeout.

At the plate for the Lady Knights freshman Michelle Spremulli (Warwick, RI) launched her seventh homerun of the year to cut the Orange County lead to 8-3 in the sixth inning. Besides that CCRI only managed on other run was brought home by Maddie McDonald (East Providence, RI) who doubled in Vanessa Santiago (Waterbury, CT) in the first inning. McDonald had two hits with an RBI and a runs scored on Spremulli's homer. The Lady Knights had five more hits but none of them could plate a run. Hannah Caliri, Tri-Captain Miranda Sasso (Smithfield, RI), Tri-Captain Kailee Morgan (Charlestown, RI), Danielle David (West Greenwich, RI) and Sam Muller added the other hits for CCRI.

After the first game Head Coach Kim Warrington commented "We had too many errors in this game which is too bad because Sam (Muller) pitched well vs. Orange. We could not string any hits together to score runs and that combined with poor fielding sealed our fate. It was nice to see Michelle hit another 2-run homer in first game to give us the 3 total runs! Unfortunately that was not enough."

Game 2: CCRI- 4 Mercyhurst- 8

In the circle for the Lady Knights getting the start in their second game of the day was Tri-Captain Kailee Morgan who pitched as well as she could versus the very potent line-up from the Saints of Mercyhurst Northeast. Morgan threw three stolid innings allowing five earned runs on four hits while walking two Mercyhurst batters to take the loss. Coach Warrington commented on the Tri-Captain playing in her final game: "Kailee used her well rounded talents to bring diversity to the team. She performed smart and steady on the mound and then played steady at third base and at the plate. "Hannah Caliri relieved Morgan throwing three strong innings allowing two earned runs on three hits walking two and striking out six Mercyhurst batters.

At the plate for the Lady Knights Tri-Captain Miranda Sasso (Smithfield, RI) had the biggest hit of the second game with a 2-run homerun in the sixth inning to cut into the Mercyhurst lead. Coach Warrington added about her Tri-Captain Catcher: "Sassy (Miranda Sasso) had a nice home run vs. Mercyhurst, which was a very nice way to finish her career here at CCRI." Michelle Spremulli had two hits an RBI and a run scored. Maddie McDonald had a hit an RBI and a run scored. In the field McDonald was also excellent with a stellar line drive snag in the left field to erase Mercyhurst hit and keep more runs off the board. Sam Muller was 2-2 with a run scored Warrington commented: "Sam went 4 for 4 for the day. Her run in the Mercyhurst game kept our game to assure a seven inning game."

Warrington finished by saying "The girls played cleaner the second game. Stevie-Rae (Travers-Wood) played her heart out for both games in the field and at each at bat during Mercyhurst. We grew a great deal as a team and got better every time we took the field. I will miss our five sophomores as they move on to four year schools and look forward to continued growth from our freshmen."
