Warwick, R.I. – April 24, 2018: The CCRI Knights baseball team traveled to South Portland, ME to take on the Seawolves of Southern Maine Community College. After dropping two the day before, the Knights looked to come back strong and end the weekend on a high note. Both games were decided by one run with the Seawolves taking game one 8-7 and the Knights taking game two 9-8. The split puts CCRI's season record to 17-15 overall, 6-5 in Region XXI play and 1-3 in league play.

CCRI – 7 Southern Maine – 8 (7 Innings)

The Knights would jump out to a great start in game one, scoring three runs in the first three innings. Two of those runs came in the top of the first inning and one followed in the third. The first run was scored off a fielder's choice that brought Owen Wosleger (East Hampton, CT) home. The second run came off a Jarrad Grossguth (Coventry, RI) single to left field, bringing around Steve Cochrane (Guilford, CT), CCRI 2 Southern Maine 0.

Fast-forward to the third inning where Steve Cochrane smacked a double to center field, scoring Austin Davis (Hollywood, FL) for the third CCRI run of the game. The Seawolves would score two runs of their own in the bottom of the third to bring the score to CCRI 3 Southern Maine 2.

The bats came alive again for the Knights in the fourth, scoring two runs. Asa Nyblom (Wakefield, RI) hit a single up the middle, scoring Michael Castillo (Cranston, RI). The next run would be scored off another fielder's choice, this time scoring Nyblom from third. After four innings, CCRI 5 Southern Maine 2.

Five runs were scored in the fifth inning, four of which went the way of the Seawolves to tie the game up at six runs apiece. The lone CCRI run came off a Zach Odsen (Providence, RI) bomb to left field. A series of Southern Maine singles provided the base runners and eventual runs to tie the game up.

Southern Maine would score another two runs in the sixth and one run from a Michael Castillo single wouldn't be enough to force extra innings. CCRI would fall just short, losing game one 7-8.

Pitching for the Knights was the combination of Matt Gutelius (South Kingston, RI) and Zach Odsen. Gutelius threw four and one thirds innings allowing six runs, of which only three were earned runs. He was relieved by Zach Odsen who threw one and two thirds innings allowing one earned run and striking out two batters.

The CCRI offense amassed 12 hits in game one. Leading that effort was Austin Davis going 2-3 with two singles and a run scored. Leading the team in RBI was Steve Cochrane with three as he went 1-4 with a double, adding a run scored. Asa Nyblom batted 2-4 with two singles notching one RBI and a run scored. Zach Odsen was 2-3 with one single and a solo homerun. Michael Castillo had two hits as well going 2-4, one double and a single, with one RBI and a run scored. Owen Wosleger notched a single with one run scored. Exavier Santiago (Bridgeport, CT) tallied one single as he batted 1-2. Jarrad Grossguth rounded off the hitting with a double as he batted 1-4 adding an RBI.

CCRI – 9 Southern Maine – 8 (7 Innings)

Game two would be another nail biter to go to the last inning. First blood was drawn by the Knights off a double steal that forced an error from the Southern Maine Shortstop that sent Austin Davis home for run number one. The Seawolves bounce back quickly, scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning.

The Knights would take back all four runs in the top of the fourth inning. A fielder's choice brought the first run of the inning, scoring Jacob Frost (Cranston, RI). Austin Davis followed this up with an RBI double to right, scoring Ray Aponte (East Providence, RI). Nick D'Ambra (Coventry, RI) slapped a triple down the left field line to score Davis for the third run. The fourth and final run of the inning came from Nick D'Ambra stealing home, taking the lead 5-4.

Southern Maine mounted what looked to be another comeback, with three runs in the fifth. CCRI quickly responded as they scored three runs themselves in their next at bat. Three RBI singles from Exavier Santiago, Austin Davis, and Jarrad Grossguth pushed the CCRI lead to 8-7. Both teams would score one more run and CCRI would prevail by one run, 9-8 in seven innings.

Taking to the mound was the regular at first base, Asa Nyblom. Nyblom threw six innings allowing five earned runs and striking out four batters. Pitching the final inning was Joey Barter (Coventry, RI). Barter allowed one run and saw the game out, earning the save.

The offense was once again led by Austin Davis as he batted 3-3 with two doubles and a single, whilst adding two RBI and four runs scored. Davis has led the team in batting average for much of the season and is ranked 10th in the country at .471 and a respectable 13th in the nation for slugging percentage at .556.

Also shining for the Knights was Nick D'Ambra who batted 3-4 with a triple and two singles, as well as one RBI and two runs scored. Jarrad Grossguth went 2-5 with two singles in game two. Ray Aponte, Justin Brown (Wallingford, CT) and Jacob Frost all recorded one hit apiece with Aponte's being a double and both Frost and Brown notching one run scored apiece.
