Knights Slay Wyverns Away From Home!

Warwick, R.I. – April 19, 2018: The CCRI Knights baseball team traveled to Worcester, MA to take on the Wyverns of Quinsigamond Community College. The Knights took an early lead which was expanded in the fourth inning and they never looked back, winning 12-5. The win improves CCRI's season record to 16-12 overall, 6-3 in Region XXI play and 1-1 in league play.

The CCRI offense would bounce back after the slight dip in form at the plate. The Knights, who were shutout in their last endeavor, would score 12 runs in Wednesday's game. CCRI took an early lead, taking one run in the first which was quickly answered back when the Wyverns grabbed one run in the bottom half themselves. The Knights scored another run in the second inning.

The game would open up in the fourth inning as the Knights scored six runs, taking the 8-1 lead. Jarrad Grossguth (Coventry, RI) hit a two-run double to start the scoring. Steve Cochrane (Guilford, CT) then hit a two-run homer to expand the lead.

The Bats didn't stop as both CCRI and Quinsigamond would score four more runs apiece and the game would end CCRI 12 Quinsigamond 5.

Jarrad Grossguth struck again in the top of the eighth inning with a solo blast to push the advantage to 9-4 in CCRI's favor.

Leading the line for the Knights was Owen Wosleger (East Hampton, CT) with two singles, one double and two runs scored. Austin Davis (Hollywood, FL) added two singles and two RBI. Jarrad Grossguth had two hits, one double and one homerun in the game, racking up three RBI and two runs scored. Steve Cochrane had a homerun himself with two RBI and two runs scored and Ray Aponte (East Providence, RI) notched a double and one run scored.

Pitching for CCRI, Matt Gutelius (South Kingston, RI) threw six stellar innings, allowing only a single unearned run and notching seven strikeouts. Relief pitchers were David Mejia (Pawtucket, RI) and Kyle McCann (Coventry, RI) the two combined for three innings of work, allowing one earned run and two hits. They would see out the game as the Knights defeated the Wyverns 12-5 in nine innings.

UP NEXT: The CCRI Knights baseball team will host UConn Avery Point for a Saturday doubleheader for games three and four of the season league series. First pitch is set for noon at Fell Field.
