Knights Drop Two in Doubleheader vs UCAP

Warwick, R.I. – April 23, 2018: The CCRI Knights baseball team hosted UConn Avery Point for a Region XXI league doubleheader on Saturday. Both games would go down to the wire as UCAP won game one 11-9 and game two 7-6. The loses drop CCRI's season record to 16-14 overall, 6-5 in Region XXI play and 1-3 in league play.

CCRI – 9 UCAP – 11 (7 Innings)

Game one of Saturday, 3 of the season between the Knights and UCAP tallied 20 runs between the teams. UCAP enjoyed the lions share oh hits with 10 compared to CCRI's five. UCAP struck first, tallying three runs in the top of the second. This was quickly answered back by the CCRI bats, scoring four runs. Joey Barter (Coventry, RI) got the first hit, a single to left field, putting Jarrad Grossguth (Coventry, RI) in scoring position. Steve Cochrane (Guilford, CT) then reached on an error. Michael Castillo (Cranston, RI) drove in the first run, scoring Grossguth off a fielder's choice. Exavier Santiago (Bridgeport, CT) hit an infield single to load the bases again after which Owen Wosleger (East Hampton, CT) smacked a three-run double pushing the score to 4-3.

The third inning would prove to be even more fruitful for the Knights as they would score five runs. The inning was led off by Zach Odsen (Providence, RI) hitting a double to left field. The first four runs were brought in by a Steve Cochrane grand slam. The scoring was rounded off by a sac fly by Exavier Santiago making the score CCRI 9 UCAP 3.

The CCRI bats would go quiet at this point, not recording another hit for the remainder of the game. UCAP would begin to claw back, taking two runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth tying the game at nine runs apiece. The fatal blow was struck in the seventh when UCAP scored two more runs and kept the Knights offense off the board to win the game 11-9 in seven innings.

A tough day in the office for the CCRI hurlers as UCAP pounced on every chance they got. Zach D'Andrea (Warwick, RI) started for the Knights, throwing five innings allowing eight hits and nine runs. Kyle McCann (Coventry, RI) came in in relief, pitching two innings and giving up two runs off of two hits.

The CCRI offense combined for five hits in game one. Steve Cochrane led the way with his homer being his sole hit of the first game bringing home four RBI and two runs scored. Zach Odsen and Owen Wosleger both notched doubles as their hits, Wosleger knocking in three RBI with said double and Odsen tallying a run scored. Joey Barter had a single as he went 1-3 with a run scored and Exavier Santiago rounded off the hits with a single, one RBI and a run scored.

CCRI – 6 UCAP – 7 (7 Innings)

Game two started off promising for the knights, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. Austin Davis (Hollywood, FL) starting things off with a single to right field. Two more singles by Zach Odsen and Jarrad Grossguth loaded the bases for Joey Barter. Barter stepped up and smashed the ball to deep left-center for his first collegiate grand slam and giving the Knights the 4-0 lead after one inning.

UCAP would answer with a two run second, with CCRI taking another run later in the inning off an Austin Davis double to center bringing around Owen Wosleger from first, CCRI 5 UCAP 2.

UCAP would score three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to take a one-run, 6-5 lead over the Knights. Jarrad Grossguth smacked a solo shot to right field to even up the game at six apiece but UCAP would score one run in the top of the seventh and yet again hold off the Knight offense to see out the game in seven innings 7-6.

CCRI totaled eight hits in game two, led by Austin Davis going 2-2 with one single and one double as well as one RBI. Jarrad Grossguth was 2-3, one single and a homerun as he notched one RBI and two runs scored. Joey Barter's lone hit on the day was the first inning grand slam, as he ended the game with four RBI and one run scored. Steve Cochrane was 1-3 with a single. Owen Wosleger went 1-4 with a single adding a run scored. Zach Odsen batted 1-3 with a single and one run scored.

Max Marcotte (Coventry, RI) took to the mound for the Knights. Marcotte threw 4+ innings, tallying six strikeouts and conceding five earned runs. Zach Odsen came in for an innings work, conceding no hits, one walk and striking out one batter. Kyle McCann threw the last two innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out one batter.

UP NEXT: The CCRI Knights baseball team will travel to face the Seawolves of Southern Maine on Sunday April 22 for a noon doubleheader.
