Warwick, R.I. – April 9, 2018: The CCRI Knights baseball team played their first two games of the season league series on Saturday. The first match up against UConn Avery Point was held at the Huskies home field where the two teams split the doubleheader. The first game went the Huskies way 14-2 and game 2 saw the Knights on top 5-3. The split puts CCRI's season record at 13-11, with a 5-2 record in Region XXI and 1-1 in league play.

CCRI – 2 UConn AP – 14 (5 Innings)

Game one of the doubleheader was all Huskies as the scored nine runs in the first two innings. The Knights would come back with two runs of their own in the third but were unable to mount a successful counter attack. UCAP would win the first game 14-2 in five innings.

The Knights offense was led by Owen Wosleger (East Hampton, CT) went 2-3 with two singles in game one. Steve Cochrane (Guilford, CT), Exavier Santiago (Bridgeport, CT) and Asa Nyblom (Wakefield, RI) added a hit apiece: Nyblom a double and singles for Cochrane and Santiago to round off the hitting in game one.

CCRI – 5 UConn AP – 3 (7 Innings)

Game two saw a change in fortune for CCRI. A three-run first inning provided the Knights a great starting platform in what would become a close game. Asa Nyblom provided those three runs in the top of the first, off a three-run homer to center field. UCAP answered with a run in the first inning and the second inning making the score 3-2. However in the top of the sixth, Jarrad Grossguth (Coventry, RI) gave the Knights a three run cushion as he smacked a two-run dinger to left field making the score 5-2. That would be all the runs CCRI needed en route to a 5-3 win in seven innings.

Starting on the mound for the Knights was Max Marcotte (Coventry, RI), throwing five innings in which he did not concede a single earned run, allowed only four hits and struck out seven Husky batters. Zach D'Andrea (Warwick, RI) came in to close out the game, throwing two innings in which he did not concede an earned run and allowed only on hit.

UP NEXT: The CCRI Knights baseball team will travel to Concord, NH on Wednesday April 11 to face the Lynx of New Hampshire Technical Institute at 3:30pm.
