Warwick, R.I. – April 16, 2018: The CCRI Knights baseball team hosted the Sharks of Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) for a Saturday doubleheader. The game was moved forward to avoid the near freezing temperatures that would be present on Sunday and both teams enjoyed the sunshine. The Sharks enjoyed more hitting than the Knights in game one however it was CCRI that would come out on top 5-3. The Knights fortune would not continue as they lost game 2 2-0, splitting the doubleheader. The split puts CCRI's season record to 15-12 overall, 5-3 in Region XXI play and 1-1 in league play.

CCRI – 5 SCCC – 3 (7 Innings)

The Sharks jumped out to a great start in the top of the first after three one-out singles to left field loaded the bases. Suffolk scored the first run of the game when Michael Pascuzzi slapped the ball towards third base. Joey Barter (Coventry, RI) did well to knock it down and prevent a second run coming home but was unable to get the out at first, CCRI 0 SCCC 1. In the following at bat, the Knights infield was abler to turn a 6-4-2 double play to, get out of the inning without conceding any more runs.

CCRI would answer back in the bottom of the second after a Steve Cochrane (Guilford, CT) solo blast to right field tied the game at one run apiece. Owen Wosleger (East Hampton, CT) hit a single to right field, advancing Exavier Santiago (Bridgeport, CT) to third base. Santiago would later score on a wild pitch, CCRI 2 SCCC 1. Wosleger was brought home after Austin Davis (Hollywood, FL) grounded to the right side of the infield and beat the toss to first, CCRI 3 SCCC 1.

Both teams were held scoreless in the third and fourth innings, pitching for the Knights was Zach D'Andrea (Warwick, RI). D'Andrea threw the complete game, seven innings, allowing just one earned run whilst striking out six batters and not conceding a single walk.

Suffolk would score two runs in the top of the fifth but were answered right back when Michael Castillo (Cranston, RI) launched the ball to straight away center field for a two-run homer which would end up being the decisive runs.

The Knights offense was led by Austin Davis batting 2-4 with two singles and one RBI. Steve Cochrane was 1-3 with a homer, one RBI and one run scored. Michael Castillo went 1-2 with a homer, two RBI and one run scored. Zach Odsen (Providence, RI) batted 1-4 with a single. Owen Wosleger rounded off the hitting as he went 2-3 with two singles and a run scored.

Neither team would score in the remaining two innings and game one would end CCRI winning 5-3.

CCRI – 0 SCCC – 2 (7 Innings)

Game two of the doubleheader was far slower paced than that of game one. Suffolk would score one run in the top of the first and another in the top of the fourth.

The Knights bat were kept quiet, only securing two hits in the game. Austin Davis was 1-2 with a single and Owen Wosleger went 1-3 with a single as well.

Kyle McCann (Coventry, RI) gave a valiant effort on the mound, throwing the complete game seven innings. McCann struck out five batters and allowed only one earned run.

The Knights defense worked hard to keep the game close. Austin Davis had an incredible, full extension catch to end the fifth inning. In the top of the seventh, with a man on third CCRI was able to get three quick outs to escape the inning without harm. However, the runs weren't there for CCRI in game two and it would end CCRI 0 Suffolk 2.

UP NEXT: The CCRI Knights baseball team will travel to Wellesley Hills, MA to take on the MassBay Buccaneers on Tuesday at 3:30 PM. The Knights were victorious in the first meeting between the teams, 13-3 back on March 29.
