Providence artist to exhibit paintings in Warwick
Oct. 13, 2011
The Community College of Rhode Island’s Knight Campus Art Gallery will present “Mark Freedman: Paintings,” a solo show featuring paintings from California and Rhode Island, from Oct. 20 to Nov. 23. A reception with the artist will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, with an artist talk at 5:30 p.m.
Providence-based artist Freedman captures urban landscapes filled with roads, cars, factories and a unique quality of light that reveals the surprising depth of our built landscape. His masterly work, using emotionally evocative colors, connects traditional painting skills and our contemporary world.
Freedman painted his new cycle California paintings from memory; the last time he was there was in 1968. He said these paintings portray, “California I remember, California I dreamt about before I went there.” He said he started this cycle nearly a year ago, on Nov. 4, 2010, when he realized that all his paintings were brown and gray and he decided he needed to use some color. At this exhibition, he will present paintings as long as 7 feet along with some smaller-scale images.
Freedman studied at SUNY Buffalo and Rhode Island College and has exhibited extensively around Rhode Island. He also has worked locally as an art instructor since 1989. To view more of his work, visit his Web site.
The gallery is located in Room 3500, on the third floor of the round building at the Warwick campus, 400 East Ave. Gallery hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.
