Purpose:  To provide financial support to a current student at CCRI who is registered for at least 9 credit hours and who has already completed 24 credit hours toward his/her degree in the Criminal Justice & Legal Studies Program.  Student must have at least a 3.0 G.P.A. in his/her major; must show that he/she is active in school and/or community activities; and must show some financial need, but need not be financial aid qualified. [Note: Financial need will be determined by the Scholarship Committee, not by the College’s Office of Financial Aid.]

Processing Procedures:
   Scholarship Chair appoints scholarship review committee to determine the award winner.

The Scholarship Review Committee shall consist of two faculty members in the Criminal Justice & Legal Studies Department plus a graduate of CCRI from the majors in the Criminal Justice & Legal Studies Department (to be chosen by the two faculty members serving on the committee).

The Scholarship Chair completes Scholarship Sign-Off form and forwards it and all applications to the Office of Institutional Advancement.


Upon receipt of all materials, CCRI Foundation check is made jointly payable to the selected recipient and CCRI.  Office of Institutional Advancement sends check and congratulatory letter to the selected recipient via certified mail with a copy to the Criminal Justice & Legal Studies Department Chair.  Copies of the letter plus a copy of the application form are sent to:

Revenue History:  Daniel J. Garvey joined the CCRI faculty (then RIJC) as Assistant Professor in 1965.  He was largely responsible for building the highly successful Business Department and served as chairman from 1969 to 1984 when he retired.  He left the chairmanship in the capable hands of his son, Joseph, who currently  serves as chairman of the Department of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies.  Account was endowed in January 1998.  The principal came from family donations, and the proceeds from the Community College’s 1996 Hall of Fame (Dr. Daniel Garvey was one of the members inducted)  In September of 1998 Daniel Garvey and Joseph Garvey executed a Deed of Gift, which conveys all revenues from the sale of the book Criminal Law Notes for Students to the Daniel J. Garvey Scholarship.
