College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) is offered at the Community College of Rhode Island. The CLEP is sponsored by the College Board and offers you the opportunity to obtain college credit by examination. Many American colleges encourage students to take CLEP tests for credit in subject areas they have mastered. People of all ages interested in pursuing a college education have reduced cost in time and money by completing CLEP tests.

CLEP TESTS ARE COMPUTER-BASED.   CLEP offers two types of 90-minute multiple choice tests. The General Examinations are designed to measure familiarity with material which would be covered in courses taken during the first two years of college to meet the general education or liberal arts requirements, and are offered in English Composition, Humanities, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences & History. Subject Examinations are designed to measure knowledge and achievement usually covered in specific college courses. The Subject Examinations, which are listed in the registration form, cover many different and specific areas.

Students wishing to take either General and/or Subject CLEP exams must submit their completed registration form with payment in advance of the testing. Each CLEP examination is $77.00 with a $30.00 Test Center Fee. Credit card is the preferred method of payment for CLEP. If you are paying by credit card, $77.00 will be billed to your credit card account, and you will need to send a check/money order made payable to CCRI in the amount of $30.00 for the Test Center fee.  If you are paying by credit card, please be sure to bring the credit card on the day of the exam.  If you are paying by check or money order, please provide 2 separate checks/money orders ($77.00 payable to CLEP and $30.00 to CCRI).

Testing is available at either 8:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. Please be advised that College Composition & College Composition Modular w/Essay is only available at 8:30 a.m.
