High School Maritime Sheet Metal

In collaboration with the Westerly Education Center and Electric Boat, CCRI enrolls students in maritime sheet metal courses that prepares students to work at Electric Boat. This course will prepare participants with the technical skills and knowledge for industry employment requiring the application of basic sheetmetal knowledge in manufacturing requirements dedicated to the production of vessels for the U.S. Navy.

Topics covered in the course include: how to interpret construction drawings; basic mathematical skills; layout, fabrication, assembly, and installation of all light-gage metalwork that includes air-conditioned ductwork, lockers, cabinets, prefabricated bulkheads, doors, furniture, and formica. Work assignments will simulate on-the-job work orders and will be accomplished using company drawings, test documents, technical manuals, shipyard procedures and shop machinery. Participants may be exposed to work conditions that include entry in restricted/confined spaces during installations. Participants will also learn and apply basic safety procedures and the companion skills of critical thinking, teamwork, communication, leadership as well as readiness to work with an emphasis on completing work that is procedurally compliant, on time, and within budget.
