Assistant professor exhibits at Flanagan gallery
March 30, 2013
The Flanagan Campus Art Gallery is showing “Gyre: works by Yvonne Leonard,” an exhibition of drawings and prints including work in intaglio and relief, through April 19.
The work on display represents a variety of thematic interests exploring the relationship between natural and material culture. The artist combines disparate subject matter depicting organic forms and existing or contrived structures.
Leonard, an assistant professor of Art at the Community College of Rhode Island, writes, “Much of the content in my work comes from the observation of natural and built environments. I am interested in the way our relationship with nature is mediated, filtered and defined by circumstance. The subject matter I work with encompasses a diverse mix of sources including biological and botanical forms, land and aquatic based organisms, climatic and geographical references, mass-produced objects and the accumulated detritus of human activity.”
To depict these subjects, she uses traditional materials such as pen and ink and various printmaking techniques, including etching and gravure.
From 1998 to 2002, Leonard served as founder and director of the printmaking program at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga., where she taught a variety of courses in print media. In late 2002, upon completion of a teaching assignment to develop an off-campus program at the Lacoste School of Art, Provence, France, she relocated her studio, Oyster Street Press, to the south coast of Massachusetts.
Leonard has exhibited her work at a variety of venues including solo and group exhibitions in New York City, Chicago, Texas, San Francisco, South Dakota, Boston, South Carolina and multiple university settings among others.
In addition to conducting printmaking workshops at Penland School, Flatbed Press, and the University of South Dakota, Leonard has taught in many capacities at a variety of institutions. Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Va,; The School of the Art Institute of Chicago; Savannah College of Art and Design; and St. Edward's University, Austin, Texas.
