The head of the humerus is the articulating surface for the humerus of the glenohumeral joint that articulates with the glenoid cavity of the scapula.  This is a ball and socket joint (triaxial) in that it allows for flexion/extension, abduction/adduction (and circumduction) and rotation of the arm.
