Faculty Learning Community for Blended Learning

Whether you’re teaching psychology, history, accounting, law studies, nursing, chemistry, math or other course, faculty can transform their teaching using active learning. Active learning can shift your classroom from passive students to motivated change makers actively engaged in the learning process. Combining active learning with a blended modality can provide students with the flexibility their lives require while also providing highly engaging active classroom interactions.

Beginning Fall 2022, the Learning Design Center will offer a Faculty Learning Community (FLC) for the investigation and experimentation of blended learning.  The FLC will meet bi-weekly during the Fall 2022 semester to explore recent research of the impact of blended learning on student success. Research may include evidence -based practices in hybrid, HyFlex or Flipped Classrooms.  Possibilities to investigate project-based, service-based, inquiry-based, and team-based learning also will be available.

In Spring 2023, each member of the FLC will teach one course in the newly designed Active Learning Classrooms testing evidence-based practices and new innovative course designs in Blended Learning. The results of the FLC will be disseminated to CCRI faculty to promote adoption of active learning and blended learning practices.

Please consider applying if you would like to:

  • Cultivate the competencies necessary to implement blended learning effectively.
  • Adapt one existing course using active learning effective practices and/or models.
  • Competently use an active classroom and associated technologies including Zoom.
  • Recognize and foster creative thinking in terms of blended and active learning pedagogies.
  • Approach problem-solving iteratively through experimentation and peer critique.
  • Foster a reflective teaching practice.
  • Become a mentor for your department in blended and active learning.

How the FLC for Blended Learning works:

  • Up to 20 faculty will participate in bi-weekly learning community meetings in Fall 2022.
  • Meetings will consist of workshop sessions, deep discussions, guest presentations, as well as visits to active learning classrooms. There will be reading and research between meetings.
  • Participant will redesign one course into a blended and/or active learning course.
  • In Spring 2023, participants will be scheduled to teach the redesigned courses in one of the new Active Learning Classrooms.
  • Participants will continue to meet once a month in Spring 2023. Meetings will be focused on sharing results and problem-solving.
  • Participants will present their work at a future symposium/conference and share their work with their departments.

To Apply:

  • Faculty and Adjunct Faculty who have been teaching in-person for more than 5 years are eligible to participate.
  • Faculty and Adjunct Faculty must be teaching in Fall and Spring either in the classroom or hybrid.
  • Participants must be available to meet bi-weekly on Monday at 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm in Warwick.

Completion and Recognition

At the end of the workshop, faculty who complete the workshop will receive a Certificate of Teaching Excellence in Blended Learning. The workshop is a total of 45 hr. of work.
