Lady Knights Volleyball falls to Holyoke

Warwick, R.I. – September 29, 2021: The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team hosted the Cougars of Holyoke Community College for a Region XXI Volleyball match on Tuesday evening.  The Lady Knights lost to the Cougars 1-3: 24-26, 21-25, 25-17 & 17-25.  With the loss CCRI falls to 1-2 for the season.

The Lady Knights had beaten the Cougars in their first match of the season at Holyoke 3-0 on September 14th.  The Cougars were out to exact revenge on their Region XXI foe and return the favor on the Lady Knights home court on Tuesday evening.  

CCRI did their best to defend their home court but Holyoke came out of the gates on fire and took a lead in the first game. CCRI rallied back to make it close but the Cougars to the first game 26-24. The Cougars kept their momentum going in the second game and won by the count of 25-21.  The Lady Knights dug deep and made some adjustments in play to take the third game by the convincing margin of 25-17.  In the fourth game CCRI game out of the gates with a 6-1 lead which caused Holyoke to call a timeout.  The timeout proved to be beneficial as the Cougars went on a nice run and before you know it the game was tied 11-11. The game remained close for a few more points until Holyoke went on a run to close out the game with the 25-17 victory which gave them the match victory at 3-1.

Leading the way statistically for the Lady Knights was freshman Outside Hitter Savanna Martinez (Central Falls, RI) with six kills, three aces and a block assist which gave CCRI accounted for nine and a half points. Martinez also added 10 digs defensively.  Freshman Co-Captain Madison Capwell (Coventry, RI) six kills three aces which accounted for nine points while adding eight digs defensively. Freshman Right Side Hitter Kara Cournoyer (Burrillville, RI) had a team-high seven kills with an ace for eight points to go with two assist and six digs. 

Also helping CCRI was Libero Aliana Winn (Lincoln, RI) with a team-high 4 aces and 19 digs.  Co-Captain Kelsey Conway (Coventry, RI) ran the CCRI offense well with 30 assists to go with three kills two aces a block assist and four digs.

The next match for the Lady Knights will be this Saturday when they host the Blue Knights of Northern Essex CC to the Flanagan Fieldhouse in Lincoln, RI for a 10am start.
