Warwick, R.I. – September 15, 2021: The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team travelled to Holyoke Community College in Holyoke, MA in Tuesday evening for their first match of the season in a Region XXI showdown. The Lady Knights defeated the Cougars of Holyoke in three straight games 25-17, 25-23 and 25-20. With the victory CCRI begins the season 1-0 overall and 1-0 in Region XXI play.

The Lady Knights were playing in their first volleyball match in 675 days and they were very eager to return to action. CCRI garnered the victory over their regional foe in three straight games but they did not play as efficiently as they might have liked. However, the Lady Knights showed that they have plenty of talent to be a force in Region XXI and the Northeast District.

CCRI controlled the first game relatively easily winning by the comfortable margin of 25-17. In the second game the Cougars of Holyoke played much better as the Lady Knights narrowly escaped with the 25-23 victory. Both teams battled hard I the thirds game as the Lady Knights wanted the sweep and the Cougars were looking to avoid the sweep on their home court but it was the Lady Knights who would emerge victorious 25-20 in the Region XXI showdown.

Leading the way for CCRI was freshman co-captain and Outside Hitter Madison Capwell(Coventry, RI) with six kills, a team-leading seven service aces which gave the Lady Knights 13 points while also adding a team-leading 10 digs defensively. Also helping CCRI was freshman Outside Hitter Savanna Martinez (Central Falls, RI) with a team-leading seven kills to contribute seven points while adding five digs. Freshman co-captain Setter Kelsey Conway (Coventry, RI) did an excellent job running the offense with 20 assists while adding three service aces, a kill and three digs. Rounding out the Lady Knights top performers in their season opener was freshman Middle Hitter Taysia Hatch (Riverside, RI) with three kills, two service aces, one dig, and two solo blocks.
