Warwick, R.I. – November 17, 2021: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team travelled to Massasoit Community College in Brockton, MA Tuesday evening to play the always formidable Warriors for a Region XXI showdown. The Lady Knights defeated the Warriors 67-54. With the victory CCRI improves to 3-0 overall and in Region XXI play.

The Lady Knights were riding a two-game winning streak nut had the task of playing one of Division III Region XXI’s top teams in the Warriors of Massasoit on their home court. In addition, the Lady Knights are starting to get recognition nationally as they are receiving votes in the latest (11/15/21) NJCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Poll. Both teams battled closely in the first quarter wit the Warriors taking a 20-19 lead into the first break. The Warriors were paced by freshman guard Sanaya Gray who scored 18 of their 20 points which included four 3-pointers. The Lady Knights relied on a more balanced attack with Maggie Schwab (Narragansett, RI) leading the way with six points and three other players with four points apiece. In the second quarter CCRI was able to quell the scoring of Gray but the Warriors still made three 3-pointers to keep them close while CCRI got six points from co-captain Michelle Moreno (Providence, RI), four from freshman guard Elizabeth Bruno (Providence, RI), and a 3-pointer from Chloe Rayko (Coventry, RI). CCFRI took a 34-33 lead going into halftime.

In the third quarter Lady Knights Head Coach Doug Haynes made some defensive adjustments while the Lady Knights continued playing with a balanced offensive attack which helped CCRI outscore Massasoit 21-6 during that time frame. Holding a tough team like Massasoit to just six points shows how well the Lady Knights were playing defensively. Offensively, Moreno and Bruno led the way with six points and five points respectively while seven CCRI players scored in the 3rd quarter.

The Lady Knights began the fourth quarter with a 55-39 lead and were able to maintain defensive intensity and play evenly with the Warriors which is all they needed to do to secure the 67-54 victory.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was co-captain Michelle Moreno charting a Double-Double while putting forth team-highs with 18 points, 14 rebounds and six assists and swiped two steals. Freshman guard Elizabeth Bruno scored 13 points with six rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Freshman center Maggie Schwab scored 12 points with seven rebounds, and three blocked shots. Freshman forward Ashley Lima (Cape Verde) set the tone inside the key with a great defensive effort with a career-high five blocked shots with seven rebounds, four points and an assist. Sophomore guard Jazlynn DiZoglio (Providence, RI) provided defensive intensity out of the guard position with a game-high four steals. Freshman forward Taylor Enright (West Warwick, RI) contributed with 11 rebounds and six points off the bench while Chloe Rayko added seven points including two 3-pointers with two assists. Sanaya Gray from Massasoit led all scorers with 20 points.

The next game for the Lady Knights will be this Saturday when they will host The Naval Academy Prep School at 12noon as part of a doubleheader with the men at the Cullen Fieldhouse in Warwick, RI.
