Lady Knights Comeback Falls Short vs No. 7 Monroe

Warwick, R.I. – November 22, 2021: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team travelled to New Rochelle, NY to play the No. 7 ranked (NJCAA DIII Women’s Basketball Poll) Express of Monroe College-Bronx. The Lady Knights lost to the Express 48-46. With the loss CCRI falls to 4-1 on the season while Monroe remains a perfect 6-0.

In a showdown of undefeated NJCAA Division III Women’s Basketball teams this game was filled with excitement and fierce competition. The Lady Knight came into the game with an impressive 4-0 record while the Express were ranked No. 7 with a 5-0 record including a victory over No, 6 ranked Hostos CC last week.

The Lady Knights shot out of the gates playing with tremendous defensive intensity which helped them get some quick early baskets. CCRI was paced early by co-captain point guard Michelle Moreno (Providence, RI) and freshman center Maggie Schwab (Narragansett, RI) who scored five points apiece. CCRI led Monroe 13-10 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter both teams played evenly scoring 14 points apiece. Nyeira Spady paced the Express with eight of her game-high 16 points in the second quarter. The Lady Knights earned most of their points in the quarter from the free throw line as Maggie Schwab scored six points including shooting 4-4 from the line in the quarter. Elizabeth Bruno (Providence, RI) scored five points in the quarter including 3-4 shooting from the free throw line. The Lady Knights would take a 29-24 lead into halftime.

The third quarter proved to be downfall of the Lady Knights as they were held scoreless on 0-12 shooting from the floor and 0-6 from the free throw line while committing 12 turnovers in the frame. Nyeira Spady kept pacing the Express with eight more points in the quarter to give Monroe a 39-29 lead going into the final quarter.

After their worst quarter of the year the Lady Knights had to figure out a way to break the Monroe press and more importantly make shots. Ashley Lima (Cape Verde) made the first basket for CCRI in over 17 minutes of game play followed shortly by a 3-pointer from Chloe Rayko (Coventry, RI). Lima made another layup followed by back-to back 3-poiointers from Elizabeth Bruno and Chloe Rayko to cut the Monroe lead to 47-45 with just 2:35 remaining in the game. With 1:55 remaining in the game Ashley Lima went 1-2 from the free-the line to cut the Monroe lead to 46-47. With :06 left in the game Ramatoulaye Diallo made 1-2 free throws to give the Express a 48-46 lead. After Diallo missed her second free throw attempt, Ashley Lima got the rebound and Lima sent an outlet pass to Elizabeth Bruno on the wing who took two dribbles before launching a deep game-tying -3-pointer that would hit the back rim and bounce out giving the Express the hard fought 48-46 victory.

Leading t way for the Lady Knights was Elizabeth Bruno with a team-high 11 points, six rebounds and an assist. Co-captain Michelle Moreno added a Double-Double with 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds to go with a game-high six assists and three steals. Maggie Schwab scored 10 points with six rebounds, an assist and a steal. Ashley Lima played well with five points, 10 rebounds and a steal while Chloe Rayko added six points on two 3-pointers.

The next game for the Lady Knights will be Tuesday the 30th at 6:00pm when they will host the Wyverns of Quinsigamond Community College from Worcester, MA in a Region XXI showdown.
