Warwick, R.I. – November 9, 2021: The CCRI Lady Knights Volleyball team had an excellent year finishing with a 7-3 overall record and earning their First Region XXI title since 2016. They recently received more very great news with three Lady Knights earning All-Region XXI honors. Freshman co-captain Outside Hitter Madison Capwell (Coventry, RI) and freshman Outside Hitter Savanna Martinez (Central Falls, RI) both earned First Team All-Region XXI honors. Freshman Middle Blocker Courtney Essex (South Kingstown, RI) earned Second Team All-Region XXI honors.

Madison Capwell earned First Team All-Region XXI honors while serving as one of the Lady Knights co-captains this season. Coming to CCRI from the perennial volleyball power Coventry High School Capwell transitioned very well into her college career as a leader for CCRI. Capwell led the Lady Knights with 98 kills and 2.45 kills per set which ranks her No. 65 in NJCAA Division III volleyball. Capwell also led CCRI with 128.5 points and 3.2 points per set, which ranks her No 57 in Division III. She was second on the Lady Knights with 26 aces and third on the Lady Knights with 118 digs. Maddie was one of the leaders both on and off the court. Capwell had her best match when the Lady Knights needed it most in the Region XXI Tournament versus Massasoit CC where she scored 21 points with 16 kills, three aces and two solo blocks.

Savanna Martinez earned First Team All-Region XXI honors in her freshman campaign as well. Martinez came to CCRI from Central Falls High School which has a formidable program in the RIIL. Martinez was a very versatile player for the Lady Knights this season. She ranked second on the team with 139 digs and 3.48 digs per set. She ranked third on the team with 65 kills and 1.63 kills per set. She ranked third I the team with 86.5 points and 2.2 points per set. Savanna also did well from the service line where she had 20 aces on the season. Martinez’s best match came versus Massasoit in their second meeting when she scored 20 points with a season-high 14 kills and added 4 aces. Martinez, like Capwell did a bit of everything for the Lady Knights this season and was arguably one of their most consistent players and was a vital key to their success this season.

Courtney Essex earned Second Team All-Region XXI honors in her freshman campaign. Essex ranked second on the team with 69 kills, and 1.73 kills per set. Essex was also ranked second on the team with 87 total points and 2.2 points per set. She was also second on the team with eight solo blocks while also adding 10 aces from the service line. Essex’s best match came in their first meeting with Massasoit CC where she had 22 total points consisting of a season-high 19 kills and three aces, Courtney also played very well in the Regional vs the Warriors where she had 17 points with 14 kills, two aces and a solo block.

The best news is that Capwell, Martinez and Essex are all freshmen so the outlook for the 2022 CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team looks bright. Head Coach Pat Chin will look to fortify the base of very good talent with another great recruiting class with the hopes of getting the Lady Knights back to the NJCAA National Tournament in Rochester, MN.
