No. 10 Ranked Lady Knights Stop STCC 64-50!

Warwick, R.I. – January 21, 2022: The No. 10 ranked (NJCAA DIII Women’s Basketball poll 1/18/22) traveled to Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) in Springfield, MA to play the Rams in a Region XXI showdown. The Lady Knights defeated the Rams 64-50. With the victory CCRI improves to 11-2 overall and 7-0 in Region XXI.

The Lady Knight and Rams were meeting for the second time this season. CCRI won the firs contest in Warwick by the score of 79-42.  However, this game would be much closer on the home court of the Rams of STCC.

Both teams battled closely in the first quarter with the Lady Knights garnering an early four point advantage 15-11 led by co-captain Michelle Moreno (Providence, RI) who scored six points for CCRI.

In the second quarter the Lady Knights defense was still playing well holding the Rams to just 11 points again in the frame. However, their offense came alive as they poured in 21 points.  The Lady Knights’ offense was led by freshman guard Chloe Rayko (Coventry, RI) who scored six points in the quarter while Moreno added another four to the CCRI tally to give the Lady Knights a 36-22 lead going into the halftime break.

In the third quarter the Rams came out with a renewed sense of vigor and outscored the Lady Knights 11-15 in the quarter led by the game’s high scorer Essence Richardson who tallied 11 points in the quarter.  CCRI still led 47-37 going into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter the Lady Knights were able to extend their lead back to 14 points with five points from Anayah Melgar (Coventry, RI) and four points apiece from Maggie Schwab (Narragansett, RI) and Elizabeth Bruno (Providence, RI) to win by the final tally of 64-50.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was freshman co-captain Michelle Moreno with a Double-Double consisting of 14 points with 10 rebounds while adding five assists, five steals and a blocked shot.  Freshman guard Chloe Rayko had 12 points including two 3-pointers. Freshman guard Anayah Melgar came off the bench to add nine points, including a 3-pointer with two assists and a steal.  Freshman forward Ashley Lima (Cape Verde) chipped in with six points while ripping down a game-high 15 rebounds.

The next game for the Lady Knights will be Sunday the 23rd when they travel to Auburn, ME to play the Mustangs of Central Maine Community College at 1:00pm.
