No. 13 ranked Lady Knights Stifle STCC 79-42!

Warwick, R.I. – December 3, 2021: The No. 13 ranked (NJCAA DIII Women’s Basketball Poll) CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Rams of Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) on Thursday evening. The Lady Knights defeated Rams 79-42. With the victory CCRI improves to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in Region XXI play.

The Lady Knights were out to keep their Region XXI record perfect versus a very tough Springfield Tech squad that was very athletic with very good size as well. CCRI shot well below their No. 3 ranked Field Goal percentage of 46.4% but made up for it with their No. 3 ranked Team Defense that allows just 44 points per game. The Lady Knights accomplish this great defense by allowing their opponents to shoot just 25.6% from the field. The Lady Knights held a very potent STCC squad to just 24.3% from the field and allowed just 42 points. The Lady Knights coupled their stifling defense by sharing the ball with excellent passing with 23 assists for the game which is above their No. 2 ranked Assists per game average of 19.9 assist per game.

In the first quarter the Lady Knights held STCC to just 5 points while scoring 22 led by Elizabeth Bruno (Providence, RI) who scored 10 points including two 3-pointers and Sharpshooter Chloe Rayko (Coventry, RI) who scored six points on two 3-pointers.

In the second quarter CCRI held Springfield Tech to just nine points while scoring 15 led by Maggie Schwab (Narragansett, RI) who scored eight points in the frame. Schwab is No. 2 in the NJCAA in Field Goal Percentage shooting at an impressive 66.7% clip from the field. The Lady Knights took a 37-14 lead into the halftime break.

In the third quarter, once again, the Lady Knights held STCC to under 10 points as the Rams could only muster eight points while CCRI erupted for 27 points to put the game away and take a 64-22 lead into the fourth quarter. Co-captain Michelle Moreno (Providence, RI) led the way in the third quarter with nine points while freshman forward Taylor Enright (West Warwick, RI) added eight points in the frame.

With the game well in hand the Lady Knights relaxed their defensive pressure and played many reserves which allowed STCC to score 20 points while CCRI scored just 15 points. However, the outcome had already been determined as CCRI would go on to win by the final count of 79-42.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was freshman guard Elizabeth Bruno with 16 points including two 3-pointers with four assists, four rebounds and a steal. Bruno is ranked No. 9 in the NJCAA with 29 assists. Co-captain Michelle Moreno charted another Double-Double with 11 points and game-high 11 rebounds to go with five assist and four steals. Moreno is ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA with 38 assists and No. 18 in Rebounds with 67 on the season. Freshman Forward Taylor Enright scored 12 points including a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line with four rebounds. Maggie Schwab scored 11 points with eight rebounds, a blocked shot an assist and a steal. Chloe Rayko scored nine points on three 3-pointers with three assists, three rebounds and a steal. Rayko is ranked No. 7 by the NJCAA with a 42.9 3-point Field Goal Percentage. Rounding out the top performers was Ashley Lima (Cape Verde) with six points, four assists, four rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals and Anayah Melgar (Coventry, RI) added six points on two 3-pointers. Lima is ranked No. 14 by the NJCAA with 2.1 blocked shots per game.

The next game for the Lady Knights will be this Saturday at 1pm when they host the Division II Vikings of Westchester Community College from Valhalla, NY.
