Warwick, R.I. – September 26, 2019: The CCRI Lady Knights soccer team hosted the Warriors of Massasoit Community College from Brockton, MA for a Region XXI interleague match on Wednesday at the CCRI Soccer Complex in Lincoln. The Lady Knights soundly overpowered the Warriors 7-0. With the victory CCRI improves to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Region XXI play.
The Lady Knights’ were led by sophomore Goalkeeper Maddie Brassard (Pawtucket, RI) and the defensive corps of Monique DaFonseca (Providence, RI), Brianna Jarrett (Westerly, RI), Adriana Lima (Pawtucket, RI) and Juliana Capraro (Foster, RI) whose stellar play leads to consecutive shutouts for the Lady Knights. Their magnificent effort allowed for the CCRI midfielders and forwards to put unbridled pressure on the Warriors.
Freshmen Forwards McKenna Leahy (Warwick, RI) and Giulia Marsella (Warwick, RI) continue to lead the way offensively for the Lady Knights while combining for five goals and three assists on the day. Leahy began the scoring for CCRI on a goal assisted by Marsella. The duo have played together since youth soccer and their chemistry on the pitch is undeniable. Leahy scored again with 13 minutes left in the half to give CCRI a 2-0 lead. The second goal was assisted by Captain Ariana Douglas (East Greenwich, RI). At the half CCRI led 2-0.

Giulia Marsella
In the second half it was Giulia Marsella who scored first for the Lady Knights assisted by Lailah Insisiengmay (Woonsocket, RI) just 10 minutes into the half. Just a couple moments later Marsella would score again assisted by, you guessed it, McKenna Leahy to make the score 4-0 with just over a half hour left in the game. About three minutes later Leahy tallied her third goal of the day assisted by Insisiengmay to give CCRI a 5-0 lead. This was Leahy’s second hat trick in eight days and she now has eight goals with five assists for the season to lead CCRI. Marsella has seven goals with two assists which has her second in scoring for CCRI. With 18 minutes left in the game Lady Knights’ Captain Ariana Douglas converted a beautiful free kick just outside the 18 yard box as she floated the ball into the right upper 90 of the net to give CCRI a 6-0 lead. Douglas capped the scoring on the day with another goal with about three minutes left to seal the 7-0 Lady Knights victory.
Head Coach Jim McGirr commented after the game: “Today’s match was one of the more complete games for us this season. In previous matches we’ve had to fix what we believed to be major issues to our overall game principles. At halftime today there were a few minor issues we needed to fine tune, which lead to us scoring five times in the second half. Our back four, along with our goalkeeper, continue to do well in the defending third of the field allowing only seven shots over the course of the past two matches. Our focus is now preparing for Saturday’s match.”
The next game for the Lady Knights will be this Saturday September 28th when they host the Seawolves of Southern Maine Community College for a match at 1pm to be followed by the men from both schools who will play at 3pm at the CCRI Soccer Complex in Lincoln.
