Warwick, R.I. – September 23, 2019: the CCRI Lady Knights soccer team hosted Falcons of Lackawanna College from Lackawanna, PA for a match at the CCRI Soccer Complex in Lincoln Saturday afternoon. The Lady Knights defeated the Falcons 2-0. With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 3-1 on the season.
The Lady Knights were playing their second match in four days after easily dispatching the Rams of STCC on Wednesday. After some transportation issues for the Falcons the match started a half hour later than expected but the hotly contested match was worth the wait. CCRI controlled the ball and tempo for most of the match as the generated a total of 24 shots during the match while limiting Lackawanna to just five shots. Falcons’ Goalkeeper Sophia Andreoli amassed 21 saves to keep Lackawanna close but the Lady Knights were able to convert two opportunities and come away with the hard fought victory.
With 9:39 left in the first half freshman Forward Giulia Marsella (Warwick, RI) tallied the first goal for the Lady Knights assisted by Veronica Lopez (Providence, RI) giving CCRI the 1-0 lead. That is where the score would stand at the halftime break.
In the second half once again the Lady Knights dominated play but only converted once. With just 6:11 left in the match Jezzalee Nunes (Warren, RI) gave CCRI a 2-0 lead assisted by McKenna Leahy (Warwick, RI) to seal the Lady Knights victory over the Falcons.
Head Coach Jim McGirr commented after the match: “Lackawanna’s goalkeeper (Sophia Andreoli) was the player of the match, making 21 saves. Even though they had some injury issues she made it very difficult for us. They did a remarkable job defending in the final third of the field but we told our players to be patient with our attacking principles. The work we did in training during the week heavily influenced the outcome of this match. Our focus is now on the next match on Wednesday.”
The next match for the Lady Knights will be Wednesday the 25th when they host the Warriors of Massasoit Community College from Brockton, MA at 4:00pm for a Region XXI interdivisional match.
