Warwick, R.I. – September 9, 2019: The CCRI Lady Knights soccer team hosted the Mustangs of Central Maine Community College (CMCC) from Auburn, ME for their home opener on Friday at the CCRI soccer complex in Lincoln, RI. The Lady Knights defeated the Mustangs 5-0. With the victory CCRI improves to 1-0 on the season.
The Lady Knights tallied their first goal of the year in her 13th minute as freshman Giulia Marsella (Warwick, RI) scored on a 1-vs-1 with the goalkeeper after she was sent in on a through ball from McKenna Leahy (Warwick, RI) to give CCRI a 1-0 lead. Just over 10 minutes later sophomore Caysie Gautreau (Burrillville, RI) scored an unassisted goal from deep in the right corner of the field at a difficult angle she sent a deep shot which floated over the keeper’s outstretched hands and into the back top corner of the net to give CCRI a 2-0 lead. The Lady Knights dominated most of the play in the first half and went into the break leading 2-0.
In the second half CCRI kept the pressure on the Mustangs which led to a goal from freshman McKenna Leahy assisted by Jezz Nunes (Warren, RI) to give the Lady Knights a commanding 3-0 lead. CCRI kept the ball in the CMCC half of the field for most of the second half and created many more scoring opportunities. Brianna Jarrett (Westerly, RI) got an assist as she sent the ball into the six yard box where Jezz Nunes was able to beat the keeper to the ball and send a shot into the bottom corner to make it 4-0 CCRI. Sophomore Caysie Gautreau sealed the game by weaving in and out of Mustang defenders and the keeper before unleashing a LASER into the top right corner giving CCRI a 5-0 lead, the score of which they would finally win.
Lady Knights’ sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Brassard (Pawtucket, RI) also had an excellent game with five saves while recording her first clean sheet (shutout) of the season.
