Lady Knights Garner First Victory Over Gators 55-44!

Warwick, R.I. – November 4, 2019: the CCRI Lady Knights basketball concluded play in the Frederick Tip –off Tournament Sunday by playing the Gators of Thomas Nelson Community College on Sunday. The Lady Knights defeated the Gators 55-44. With the victory CCRI improves to 1-1 on the season.
Playing in their second game in two days the Lady Knights came out of the gates slowly versus the Gators of Thomas Nelson. The Gators stormed out to a 26-17 first quarter lead. The Lady Knights kept it close in the first with two 3-pointers apiece from Ireauna Pegus (Middletown, RI) and Kelsey Kozlin (West Warwick, RI). In the second quarter the Lady Knights ratcheted-up their defense a few notches and held the Gators to just two points! CCRI once again were making steals left and right as they combined for 19 teams steals led by Ireauna Pegus with seven and Jazlynn Jimenez (Providence, RI) with five for the game. Led by their stifling defense the Lady Knights went into the halftime break leading 32-28.
In the third quarter both teams struggled to maintain any offense as the combined for 15 total points eight from CCRI and seven from the Gators. In the fourth Pegus scored seven of the Lady Knights’ 15 points while helping hold Thomas Nelson CC to just nine to walk away with the 55-44 victory.
Leading the way for the Lady Knights was freshman Ireauna Pegus with her first career Double-Double with a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds while adding seven steals and three assists. Freshman Kelsey Kozlin also had a very good game with 14 points including four 3-pointers with five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Freshman Jada Burton (Providence, RI) just missed a Double-Double with nine points and 11 rebounds while adding three steals and two assists. Freshman Jazlynn Jimenez (Providence, RI) had six points, a game-high seven assists with five steals and four rebounds. Rounding out the CCRI top performers was freshman Reilly Hodge (Wakefield, RI) with six points, six rebounds and an assist.
The next game for the Lady Knights will be Thursday the 7th when they travel to Charlestown, MA to play the Bulldogs of Bunker Hill CC for a Region XXI interleague game at 5:30pm
