Lady Knights Cannot Stave off STCC, fall 78-68

Warwick, R.I. – November 18, 2019: The CCRI Lady Knights Basketball team hosted the rams of Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) from Springfield, MA on Saturday for a Region XXI inter league game. The Lady Knights fell to the Rams 78-68. With the loss CCRI falls to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in Region XXI play.
After coming off a tough loss the Pointers of UConn-Avery Point the Lady Knights were trying to bet back into the win column versus the Rams of Springfield Tech. The Lady Knights held a small lead 17-14 after one quarter led by Sophomore Nicole Chamberlain (West Warwick, RI) with six points on two 3-pointers, Kelsey Kozlin (West Warwick, RI) with five points including a 3-pointer and Jada Burton Hall (Providence, RI) who added four points.
The Lady Knights had a tough time dealing with the size of STCC especially Raven Wilson who score 14 points in the first half. CCRI combatted the Ram’s size with numbers and intensity at the boards even though they were outsized they outrebounded STCC 47-38 during the contest. With the Rams using their size to score easy baskets but CCRI creating opportunities with extra possessions by rebounding both teams went into the break tied 35-35.
Springfield Tech go the better of the Lady Knights in the third quarter outscoring them 23-18 with a balanced scoring attack while CCRI countered with scrappy defense and fierce team rebounding while being led in scoring by Jada Burton Hall who scored six of the Lady Knights’ 18 points. After three quarters STCC led CCRI 58-53
In the fourth quarter freshman Kelsey Kozlin tried to spur a comeback for the Lady Knights scoring seven points including a 3-pointer but CCRI could not get enough stops to prevent the Rams from increasing their lead as the went on to win by the final score of 78-68.
Leading the way for the Lady Knights was freshman Kelsey Kozlin with a team-high 18 points, including two 3-pointers with seven rebounds, three assists and a steal. Freshman Jada Burton Hall charted her first double-double of the season with 16 points, 10 rebounds and an assist. Sophomore Nicole Chamberlain had 12 points, including three 3-pointers with four rebounds and three assists. Ireauna Pegus (Middletown, RI) had 10 points, six rebounds and two assists while Janessa Perry (Charlestown, RI) added six points with nine rebounds, an assist and a steal. The Rams Raven Wilson led all scorers while putting up a monster stat line which included 25 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots.
The next game for the Lady Knights will be Tuesday the 19th when they will host the Lions of Gateway Community College from New Haven, CT at 5:30 for a Region XXI inter league game.
