Lady Knights Fall 68-56 to Hagerstown in Season Opener

Warwick, R.I. – November 4, 2019: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to Frederick Community College in Frederick, MD to compete in the Frederick CC Tip-off Tournament to begin the 2019-20 season. In their first game they faced the Hawks of Hagerstown Community College. The Lady Knights fell to the Hawks 68-56. With the loss CCRI begins the season 0-1.
The Lady Knights were bit shorthanded with only six players available to them in the game but they made the most of it while they could. The Lady Knights played tremendous team defense as they generated 23 team steals. However, they also ran into some foul trouble which ultimately contributed greatly to their defeat.
The Lady Knights jumped out of the gates with a dominant first quarter to take a 15-4 lead. Freshman Jada Burton (Providence, RI) led CCRI scoring 11 points. Hagerstown made some defensive adjustments in the second quarter to slow down Burton which allowed them to tie the game by halftime as they outscored CCRI 21-10 to go into the break tied 25-25.
In the third quarter Hagerstown kept their momentum flowing but the Lady Knights made some adjustments of their own as they began utilizing a balanced attack with five of their six players making it into the scoring column. After the third quarter the Lady Knights trailed by three points 45-42. CCRI battled tough in the fourth quarter with four points from Burton and four from Jazlynn Jimenez (Providence, RI) but the short bench and foul trouble was their undoing as three players fouled out and they ended the game shorthanded. The final score of the game was 68-56.
Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Jada Burton with a game-high 25 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists. Also scoring in double-figures for CCRI was Jazlynn Jimenez with 11 points game-high eight steals with five rebounds and three assists. In addition, Ireauna Pegus (Middletown, RI) added six points, seven steals, four rebounds and two assist and Kelsey Kozlin (West Warwick, RI) added six points on two 3-pointers with seven rebounds and two steals.
The Lady Knights will face the Gators of Thomas Nelson Community College to compete their play in the Frederick Tip-off Tournament.
