Second Half Surge Leads Lady Knights over Lions 65-57!

Warwick, R.I. – January 31, 2020: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to Gateway Community College in New Haven, CT to play the Lions in a Region XXI non-league game. The Lady Knights utilized a second half surge to comeback and defeat the Lions 65-57. With the victory CCRI improves to 6-18 overall and 3-4 in Region XXI play.

This was a rematch of their game on November 19th which saw The Lions defeat the CCRI by 21 points 58-37 in Warwick. On Thursday in New Haven this game looked like it may have a similar result. However, the Lady Knights clawed their way out of a 12-point deficit early in the first half and were also down 27-21 at half time.

The Lady Knights outscored Gateway 44-29 in the second half to comeback with a dramatic 65-57 hard fought road victory. With the score 27-21 at halftime Head Coach Doug Haynes and his staff made some adjustments which sparked the Lady Knights’ offense as they erupted for 27 third quarter points. The CCRI surge was led by freshman Ireauna Pegus (Middletown, RI) who scored eight points including two 3-pointers. Pegus got help from Sophomore Co-Captain Nicole Chamberlain (West Warwick, RI) who had seven points including a 3-pointer. Freshman Co-Captain Jazlynn DiZoglio (Providence, RI) contributed five points to the comeback. After three quarters the Lady Knights had overcome the deficit to take a one point lead 48-47.

In the final quarter CCRI closed out the game by holding the Lions to just 10 points while they pulled away by using a balanced attack to score 17 points to secure the 65-57 road victory. In the fourth Jazlynn DiZoglio led the way with seven points and Ireauna Pegus added six points.

The Lady Knights were led by Ireauna Pegus who charted her fourth double-double of the season with a game-high 18 points including three 3-pointers and 14 rebounds with three steals, a blocked shot and an assist. Freshman Co-Captain Jazlynn DiZoglio had a spectacular all-around game and just misses a triple- double by one steal with 16 points, a career-high 11 assists and career-high nine steals. Sophomore Co-Captain Nicole Chamberlain chipped in with 15 points including three 3-pointers with eight rebounds, two steals and two assists. Also performing well for the Lady Knights was freshman Co-Captain Reilly Hodge (Wakefield, RI) with nine points, two rebounds and an assist.

After the game Head Coach Doug Haynes commented “This was a great team win with everyone contributing. IP (Pegus) and Jazz (DiZoglio) played great in this game and Nicole (Chamberlain) also helped us when we need it. They did not quit. This was the first time we saw our ladies face adversity and pull out the victory. We (the coaches) knew they could do it and now they have shown they CAN do it.”

The next game for the Lady Knights will be This Saturday the first of February when they Lady Knights host the high scoring Pointers of UConn-Avery Point at 12:30 at the Cullen Fieldhouse in Warwick
