The Knights battled valiantly against the Vikings but would be vanquished in overtime 88-87. The loss drops CCRI’s season record to 10-5 overall.
CCRI struggled early in Saturday’s game against a strong Westchester squad. The Vikings came out with a high intensity that was difficult to match. CCRI found themselves behind on the score board 21-14 with 12:21 left in the first half. Westchester kept up the pressure and some errors on the part of CCRI’s offense led to the score line broadening. At halftime the Vikings led the Knights 51-34.
The beginning of the second half saw the Knights’ offense play with more efficiency and making every possession matter. CCRI started to chip away at the lead, trailing 60-49 six minutes in before drawing within one point three minutes later. Both teams would go back and forth but Westchester would hold onto the lead.
With 37.9 seconds left on the clock and trailing 76-73, CCRI got a crucial defensive stop after a prolonged Westchester possession. The Knights then had 10.9 seconds left to tie the game up. Sophomore co-captain Elijah Lewis (Bridgeport, CT) took control of the ball drove and pulled up for his second buzzer beater three of the season, this time to send the game to overtime.
Westchester started the overtime period strong and CCRI was forced to play catch up again. CCRI got within one point but were unable to reproduce their magic again and would lose the game 88-87 in overtime.
The Knights’ offense was led by freshman Reece Bullock (Coventry, RI) with a double-double as he scored 21 points, shooting 2-4 from three-point range with 10 rebounds, two assists and one steal.
