Lady Knights Volleyball Falls in District Tourney

Warwick, R.I. – November 5, 2018: The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team traveled to Lackawanna College in Scranton, PA to compete in the NJCAA DII District L Tournament over the weekend. The Tournament featured teams form Regions III, XV, XIX and XXI. The Lady Knights were in Pool B and faced Delaware Tech and Mercyhurst Northeast. The Lady Knights lost both matches 3-1 ending their season with an 11-13 record. However for her outstanding play freshman Outside Hitter Jasharilee Diaz (Central Falls, RI) earned District L All-Tournament honors.
CCRI falls to Delaware Tech (3-1): 16-25, 25-22, 18-25 & 23-25
The Lady Knights lost the first set to Delaware Technical Community College 25-16. However in the second set CCRI rallied to win 25-22. Del Tech made some adjustments and was able to take the third set 25-18. In the fourth set the Lady Knights battled very hard but came up just short falling by the narrowest of margins 25-23.
Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Jasharilee Diaz with a team-high 16 Kills with two Service Aces and a Solo Block accounting for a total of 19 points while tying for the team lead with 16 Digs. Diaz was helped by Sophomore Tri-Captain Ivelisse Serrano Vargas (Arecibo, PR) who had 11 Kills, 16 Digs, an Ace and a Solo Block. Also helping CCRI was sophomore Tri-Captain Sam Elkas (Cumberland, RI) with three Kills and four Service Aces and Setter Danielle D'Andrea (Lincoln, IL) ran the CCRI offense will distributing 28 assists with an Ace and 15 Digs.
CCRI falls to Mercyhurst Northeast (3-1): 16-25, 25-17, 23-25 & 20-25
In the second match for CCRI the Lady Knights faced the eventual District L Champion in the Saints of Mercyhurst Northeast. The Lady Knights dropped the first two sets top the Saints 25-16 and 25-17. CCRI did battle back to win the third set 25-23 to avoid the sweep but Mercyhurst was able to win the fourth set by the score of 25-20.
Leading the way versus Mercyhurst was Tri-Captain Ivelisse Serrano Vargas with eight Kills and an Ace with 18 Digs. Tri-Captain Sam Elkas had four Kills and two Solo Blocks and Jasharilee Diaz had five Kills and 15 Digs. Also helping CCRI was Danielle D'Andrea with five Aces, 20 assists and six Digs and Manuela Restrepo (Central Falls, RI) added five Kills and tow Digs.
After the District L Tournament concluded they announced the All-Tournament Team where Freshman Outside Hitter Jasharilee Diaz was named a member. Diaz had an excellent tournament with 21 Kills and 31 Digs with two Service Aces and a Solo Block. That was quite a tournament performance for the talented freshman.
