Softball Spring Training 2018

Warwick, R.I. – March 13, 2018: The CCRI Lady Knights softball team continued play in the Cocoa Beach Spring Training Session at Chain of Lakes Park in Titusville, FL. On their third day they faced the Titans of the County College of Morris and lost 18-4. With the loss CCRI falls to 0-5 on the season.

CCRI - 4 CC Morris - 18 (5 innings)

This game was very different from what the ending score line would indicate with many positives to take away for CCRI. The Titans had beaten CCRI 11-1 in CCRI's first game of season but in the first three innings it was a very close back and forth contest. CC Morris took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before the Lady Knights stormed back in the third inning scoring four times to take a 4-1 lead. Morris clawed back with two runs in the bottom of the third to make the score 4-3 CCRI. The four run third was capped-off by 2-run home run from freshman Michelle Spremulli (Warwick, RI). This was the Lady Knights first lead of the season against a very potent Titan's line-up. How potent, well, in the fourth inning Morris erupted for 15 runs on eight hits which led to them winning by the mercy rule.

In the circle for CCRI was Sam Muller (North Stonington, CT) who gave up seven hits and walked five Titans to take the loss for CCRI. Muller was relieved by Hannah Caliri (Pawtucket, RI) who threw an inning giving up five hits, three walks and struck out two Titans. Both Muller and Caliri were victim to a rough fourth inning where the very potent Titan's line-up had eight hits and benefited from six walks which led to the lopsided scoreline to what was a very close game. Morris had the best group of hitters that CCRI faced during the entire session in Florida and it showed in this game.

Offensively for CCRI Michelle Spremulli led the way with her first collegiate Home Run, a 2-run bomb on a line-drive to right center field that left the park in a hurry, a "no doubter". The Home Run gave CCRI a 4-1 lead at the time. Also helping CCRI was freshman Maddie McDonald (East Providence, RI) who went 2-3 with two singles and Tri-Captain Kailee Morgan (Charlestown, RI) who had a single and a run scored. Rounding out the CCRI offense was freshman Vanessa Santiago (Waterbury, CT) with a single, Hannah Caliri with a walk and run scored and Tri-Captain Stevie-Rae Travers-Wood (Little Compton, RI) with a run scored. Despite the ending scoreline this was yet another very good game for the Lady Knights who continue to show consistent improvement against some of the tougher teams they will face until the postseason. That being said, these games will serve as motivation and prepare this very talented Lady Knights' squad for their own post season run.

The Lady Knights have one more game in Florida Monday the 12th vs St. Cloud Technical CC from St. Cloud, MN.
