Warwick, R.I. – March 22, 2018: The CCRI Baseball held their first home game of the 2018 season with a rescheduled matchup with local school Johnson and Wales University Wildcats. A shaky start saw the Knights have to fight back to take the late lead and hold off the Wildcats in route to a 9-8 victory. The win puts CCRI's season record at 4-6.

CCRI – 9 JWU – 8 (9 Innings)

The CCRI Knights came home to a freshly thawed out field looking to kick start their 2018 season with four out of five week games being home contests. However, early errors dug CCRI into a hole, after the top of the fourth concluded, JWU were enjoying a 6-0 lead.

The Knights' bats would liven up come the bottom of the fourth. CCRI would score four runs in back to back innings, leading JWU 8-6 after five innings of play. Anthony Padilla (Vega Alta, Puerto Rico), and Owen Wosleger (East Hampton, CT) both went 1-2 with Wosleger stealing a base along the way. Austin Davis (Hollywood, FL) batted 1-2 with two runs scored and 1 RBI while adding a stolen base for good measure. Jarrad Grossguth (Coventry, RI) went 1-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. David Mejia (Pawtucket, RI) chipped in going 1-3 with one run scored and two RBI.

The Knights' pitching rebounded well from early turbulence. Matt Gutelius (South Kingstown, RI) took the mound to start for CCRI. Gutelius pitched three and two thirds innings allowing four earned runs off of four hits. Kyle McCann (Coventry, RI) came in and threw four and one third innings allowing two earned runs while striking out five wildcat batters. Korey Fijal (Johnston, RI) came into to close, throwing a scoreless inning allowing just one hit to get the save and secure the 9-8 win for the Knights.

UP NEXT: The CCRI Baseball team will travel to play Bunker Hill CC on Thursday March 22.
